The "hidden" location menu on your iPhone

Speaking of insurance OBD dongles,

If you have an iPhone and didn't know this:

Go to:

Settings>
Privacy>
Location Services>
System Services>
Frequent Locations>

Click on "frequent locations" and you can see everywhere you've been, on what day, and for how long.

Don't worry though, you can "turn it off."
That means you can make it so YOU can't see it. They still can, of course.

Have fun!

It only holds 30 odd days of data.

Not really hidden, it's been around since at least iOS 7.

The data is only stored on the phone, not sent to Apple and Apple can't access it, app developers can't access it, it also does not survive backups to iTunes or iCloud.

It's strictly an end user device level feature.

What it does is use crowd sourced information about cell towers, open WIFi, to reduce the time it takes to determine your location for things like nearby services, traffic, weather. etc...

Sounds Orwellian but it really is benign and actually useful.

There is a Find My IPhone function in the same menu set. You can access location from ICloud or another IPhone. Don't know permission steps required to find it. I hope there are some.

Only found this out this morning telling a pal about this thread. He recently found an IPhone with a shattered screen on the street in his hood. His kids turned it on. Within a couple of hours a knock on the door. "It says my Mom's IPhone is in your house"

Friend of mine lost his phone at a concert.

Was pretty sure the group of younger guys behind him had taken it.

About 4 in the morning he got a hit on it's location using the Find feature.

Was an hour drive away. He stopped in at the local Sherriff's office, explained the situation, and a deputy went with him to the house.

Deputy knocked and sure enough one of the kids from the concert answered.

At first he denied having it until the Deputy showed him that Find My iPhone said it was here at this location then added, "right now it's just a lost phone but it's about to turn into possession of stolen property any second now"

Friend got his phone back.

A travel buddy of mine got his phone stolen at DIA, and the "find my iPhone" found it 2 hours later on the runway at SFO. for a few minutes, and then it was gone forever.

I have an app on my Sons phone that basically tracks exactly where he is. While there are those that might feel that this is an infringement on his civil liberties...they can go pound sand.

Oh yeah?

Try taking the phone away and then see who's complaining about civil liberties.

Can't your son just uninstall the app, then reinstall it before he staggers home smelling like a brewery in Cupid's den? Or is the app on your phone that is tracking his?

+1.

As long as I'm paying for the phone, I get to make the rules.
