So how much did this doe cost me?
I shot a small doe tonight, last 15 minutes of legal hunting on the last day of the main gun season in OH. A group of them was crossing an overgrown two track, I picked one and squeezed off. Damn thing sure looked bigger in the scope. :D
So anyhoo, I'm sitting there think, how much did this doe cost me? Let's see, new Henry rifle this year($600), Burris scope($200), shoot up 5 boxes of .44 getting it sighted and and goofing around ($200), gas, license, food, various tidbits($100). Great, lets add that up.....don't forget to carry the one....now divide by how many pounds meat I'm going to get from this deer....man, I like venison. But I don't know how much I like it at $50 a pound. :) |
We call it deer meat down here...worth every cent...
|
Yep.
Drove to Valdez from Anchorage. Five hours. Hotel, $150-ish (late 80's). Gas, food, etc, say $150. $100 for charter. Caught two silver salmon. Maybe 18 lbs each, loaded. Drive back to Anchorage. Salmon glut. $1.89 per pound at Carrs grocery. |
Respectfully, I would submit that you are looking at it backwards. Life is a journey, not a destination.
Also, that Henry is a sweet piece of gear that will be a family heirloom, so there is that too. |
Maybe you aren't an MBA, but the rifle, scope, etc. you amortize over years, so your sunk costs are much less. Maybe 1/3rd.
|
I paid $160 for a costume to wear at a gig last night that paid $100. I need to get more gigs. Nevermind the $7k rig I played through.
|
So if the useful life of your Rifle is 5000 rounds and you shoot 250/yr then to feel better about it you should amortize it by 20 years along with the scope. So the gun cost you $40.
|
I pay approx. $40 for a Cal fishing license, $350 fly rod and reel, $250 waders, $120 for boots. Line, leader, tippet run $85. Flies average $3 a piece. I spend an average of $175 for gas and motel. Then I catch the trout and let them go.
You my friend, are getting a real bargain. |
Never look at it that way, you will always be disappointed. Just go to the grocery if it's a price per pound analysis.
The only exception is hunting out of your home window (I know some one who does this) with tags only and you do the processing yourself. I spent a few days with my daughter hunting this season in some of the greatest big game country in the US on public land. Tags, gas, food, $100+. Maybe. Very cheap I did not buy a tag just Her. No shots taken. Value $1,000,000,00+ I have spent big bucks on big game on trips, this was worth more. It's worth what your looking for. Never confuse it with Money. It's a great experience to be shared with friends and family. The only ways it pays is if your poaching or shooting out windows. Trips out with friends and family are the valuable ones. I have paid well over $40.00/ per pound for meat that took all day for me to pack out. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449463851.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449463872.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449463886.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449463900.jpg |
I think you are being facetious. At least I hope you are. Maybe you are bummed the doe was small, but small is young and young is TENDER! :) You can never get that quality of meat at the store.
Plenty of people shoot expensive guns at paper only. Drive their 4x4 to go hiking, camp in the woods to sit at the camp fire and read ... you get the drift ... Congrats on your doe! George |
This one and about 20 of his friends are in my front yard every afternoon. Probably could run out and kill it with a hammer. Could probably drag it up to the house with riding mower. Pretty cheap meal if you go in for that sort of thing.

Robin of Loxley got the best deal. Rumored somethings better about the taste of the King's deer.

Guys, I was totally kidding here. I love deer hunting. I don't care what it costs.
My dad and I made a trip to the Michigan UP for 4 days of hunting in November, and came away empty handed. Those moments with my dad a very precious to me. The cost, and frankly getting a deer, are not important. Patrick, I got the deer in the Delaware county. Delaware state wildlife area. Deer are indeed ubiquitous her in OH. |

"Hunter" Kills Pet Whitetail With Hammer | News OK |
Back when I was in high school my parents got into fishing. My dad figured the fish were about $200 per pound for the Bass they brought home. I figured it was money well spent. I would usually come home from work after school and they were gone until Sunday afternoon. Gosh,as a high school kid I sure hated to have them gone for the weekend.
