How to sell a Spoon
I have an unused Ruger LCR 38 special that I need to sell and I have no clue as to how to sell it. I live in California and even though I do not know much I do know it will be a hassle to sell. Do I go to a gun shop or sell online? Appreciate the advice. Thanks,

Not sure about CA's laws but I'm pretty sure you can sell it on Gunbroker.com, and you would have to find someone with a FFL (or a shop) to send it to the FFL of the buyer's choice.

CA frowns on private in state sales, they require registration on transfer. Gunbroker is the way to go.

Take it to cabela's and see what they'll offer you for it. Then add 20-40% to that on the private market.
Don't know Ca gun laws, but I have a feeling you'll need an FFL to help you sell it.

"Give" it to a friend in AZ and have him sell it for you.

I was going to go to a local gun store and see how much they'd buy it. Unfortunately their "PPI" guy only comes on Fridays and weekends and I just haven't found the time.
For local transactions, transfer must be made at an FFL. FFL charges a fee $25 and up to facilitate the transaction. |

You sell it on calguns forum. Meet at a local gun store aka FFL dealer and ask for a "private transfer". Easy peasy. Of course you can sell it directly to the dealer, if you don't mind ending up short a couple hundred bucks. As far as the paperwork and "safety" goes, it is the same result, as the paperwork will be from the same dealer either way.

Calguns, or Turner's sells on consignment. Ain't no Cabelas in Ca., they won't touch this state with a 10' pole.

In California you have to use an FFL to do the transfer to the person buying it. This is even if personal to personal sale. If the gun crosses state lines then it also must use an FFL at the receiving end even in states with much more lax laws such as AZ or NV, that is the federal law. The only exception is a firearm (pistol or rifle) that can not use a cartridge such as a muzzle loader, including the modern reproductions which are covered under federal law. You can verify this by checking out South Bat Rod and Gun Club website and obtain our president's (Don Gussler) telephone number who is a long time (very) FFL and knows the rules and see what he says.
You can sell it on Gunbroker but the last time I looked there are a lot of LCR models for sale and they are going for less than what they cost new. I would consider finding a shop as suggested and you will get less for it due to their fees and such AND the first thing they will do is run the serial number to see if the gun shows as stolen. If you have the paperwork from when you bought it then you are okay but if you are not allowed to posses the gun then it might be confiscated? |

There is a Turners in Signal Hill very close to you. Just take it there and let them sell it. Turners will handle all the FFL paperwork. They won't own it, so it'll be a simple CA person to person transfer and not effected by DOJ roster lists, etc. Easy-peasy.
They're for sale NIB ("New in Box") all day long retail for $450, and down to $425 NIB on Gunbroker. Even though it's never been fired, and hopefully you have the box and paperwork, it's probably worth about $375 used. You'll probably see about $325 cash after Turner sells it…and it'll sell fast if you do it now while everybody is crazy after the San bernardino event.

Even if you sell on calguns you will probably end up at Turners to do the FFL paperwork, as said buyer usually pays fees (specify that when you post the ad).
