Anti Virus Software? Windows 10.
 

What anti virus software do you guys recommend for Windows 10?

I have used Norton for 10 years never had a problem

On Win 10 I use the included Windows Defender, which has actually caught a couple of java exploits. Type "defender" in your search bar, you already have it.
I then run SpyHunter to remove or check for malware.

McAfee was total rubbish; it corrupted itself to the point I had to totally uninstall it. Same thing happened to my wife's PC and McAfee had to remote onto it to clean it up.

I think most of them suck, you have to find the one that sucks the least.

Windows Defender and whatever they're calling it now under 10 is actually pretty damn good. I've gotten no better results from paid services vs free. Avast and AVG worked well. Best strategy - don't be stupid. Cuts down on 80-90% of the issues.

Last time I tried Norton it really slowed down PC.

The best free software right now is Avast Anti Virus. Lots and lots of people use it.

I've been using Kaspersky Internet Security and never had a problem with viruses. What got me onto Kaspersky was I was using AVG freeware and got a virus on a desktop. Kaspersky was at the time one of the only antivirus programs that could install on a system that was infected and clean it. I have had friends bring their hard drives over so I could clean them. I've never had a friend bring a drive over that Kaspersky couldn't clean.

I had a problem, which I was told was due to infection/corruption, that made my spreadsheets unusable for two days. Solved it by fresh installing Windows 10 in a new virtual machine (I run Windows on Parallels). But I might not be lucky twice, so I think I'm going to run antivirus Finn now on.

Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and Backup weekly to a portable hard drive. And don't do stupid stuff online that might get you viruses and spyware.

Antivirus software just bogs your system down. I've tried all the major brands and have uninstalled them after a few weeks of cursing at how they turned my new "state of the art" fast system into a x486.

My opinion only. YMMV.

We normally use Norton, because our ISP provides it for free. My wife's computer at work had a nasty Rootkit. I used Malwarebytes to kill it off, then Rkill and Malwarebyte Root Removal software to find the last little bits. The Rootkit actually had the ability to block downloading MWB!

I suspect she clicked on an e-mail attachment.

Anyway, Norton apparently failed! I'm leaving MWB on her PC and I activated Windows Defender and seeing how it runs.

Everyone seems to have a favorite, but CNET pretty much rates all of them the same these days.

All AV solutions have the same vulnerability.

They can only prevent what they already know about.

Meaning someone somewhere is going to get hit by it until the providers find it and update their definitions.

And yes, most malware disables the downloading and or installation of solutions.

avg works for me

The good news is that there is only one PC on the Network with the Rootkit. I still think PEBKAC.

I cringe for the same issue with my elderly parents. My mother is a multi-clicker (If it doesn't work, keep clicking).

Back on topic, on my older PCs, Norton really seems to slow them down.

The included Windows stuff has gotten much better. Norton has gotten much more expensive. I may drop Norton next year.

I have had stuff get past both Norton and AVG, but that was many years ago.

I have been using Avast for the past several years - no issues.
