Exit Wound

How timely is this - with all the talk amongst us shooters on HardDrive's thread about hard cast bullets in his .44 mag Henry lever gun, I was presented, just this afternoon, a great opportunity to reaffirm the impressive penetration of the heavy for caliber lead bullet moving at moderate velocity.

I found myself out on the back deck refilling my various bird feeders which, this time of year, is a daily chore. We have a lot of really cool little songbirds that hang out with us through the winter (my sons say I'm creating a "dependent population", which may be true, but we do keep them well fed. The old timers that know me will even land on my head, but that's another story).

So, feeders full, I'm hanging out with the little guys, when I suddenly spied movement inside the base of a juniper bush. I thought maybe it was a bird, but further investigation revealed a burrow... hmm...

Out comes the peanut butter. Smeared a little right next to the hole, and dropped a couple of pea sized lumps down into the hole. Sure enough, within half an hour, we had activity...

Out comes my 1979 Sheridan Blue Streak, "Steroid" modified my Timmy Mac of Mac1 Airguns. 12 pumps now drives a 14.3 grain, .20 caliber (5mm) pellet to a thundering 720 fps. The rat bastard never had a chance...

The pellet caught him on the point of his left shoulder from ten yards away, at a kind of quartering towards me angle. It exited behind the right shoulder, as seen in the photo. Yet another "cast bullet" (kinda sorta...) gets the job done...:D

You've hurt that rat's self-esteem. Not being very inclusive. Maybe you and he should have tried some group therapy. Why do you solve your problems with violence?

sammyg2 12-15-2015 03:27 PM

If only the rat had a violence-free safe zone ....

(good shooting)

On top of all that, you exposed the rat to peanuts, a known allergen. You violated his rights created a hazard, and gave him lead poisoning. You, sir, are a menace.

Got a 'dillo in our fenced yard, was driving the dog nutz and I couldn't chase it out of the gate. CCI Quiet (40grn LRN @ 710fps) can shatter both shoulders of a 'dillo on the way through and leave a massive exit holt... out of a 26" barrel bolt gun is suppressor level quiet. My baby sleeping on the other side of a wall I was next to didn't even notice, and the wife didn't hear it over the baby monitor.

how far was that shot? and did Tim install that peep..what is the front sight?

i'm gonna send mine off. hell, maybe just drop it off as i drive by. he is in Los Angelos right?

Baz 12-15-2015 03:52 PM

Shouldn't this thread be over in PARF?

Rick V 12-15-2015 03:57 PM

You shot an unarmed rat? There is gonna be rat riots in your back yard

varmint 12-15-2015 04:14 PM

should this be merged with the "how to cook roast beast" thread?

 here we go.

Don't worry Baz. Rats are like grey pubic hairs. If you pull one, three come back in it's place.

Nice! I love shooting with air rifles. I have a 1200 fps Gamo. My F.I.L calls me whenever he has a skunk in his live trap and I have to go over and take care of it. My son and I actually squirrel hunt with air rifles.

Yup, Tim drilled and tapped the receiver and installed the peep, and he is in L.A. Just do it - you won't be disappointed. The early Sheridans were not factory drilled and tapped for the peep sight. The front sight is the one the rifle came with. I just painted it white so it shows up better in twilight.

As far as I could tell, the little rat bastard expressed no political or religious affiliations.

Bill Douglas 12-15-2015 04:59 PM

That rat is one guilty bastard.

As much as I dislike speaking ill of the the dead... He is a guilty bastard; look at that tummy on him. He's been working the bird feeder scene for quite some time.

mreid 12-15-2015 05:06 PM

He'd be pushing up daisies if his feet weren't nailed to the deck.

Uh...oh wait...he is pushing up daisies.
