Street Racing Sentences

Driver who killed 2 spectators during street race in Chatsworth gets 12 years in prison - LA Times

Was this discussed and I missed it?

How do they allow the show Street Outlaws on?

Street Outlaws is a not necesarily setting a good example for today's youth, but I don't believe it is as dangerous as some of the youtube videos about dicing through traffic. The show is set on a pre-arranged closed road, that I am sure has the blessing, and coverage of the local police. The only "real" part of the show might be some of the test hits, but I just bet that the local constables look the other way, because the show brings alot of money into the area, whether indirectly through meals, hotel rooms, and fuel sold locally, or directly, by being on the show's payroll.

When I had surgery and was down for two weeks I admit to watching "street outlaws".
Like most 'reality' (I use the term loosely) shows it start to wear thin and easy to see how it is scripted.
First big flaw in the show is there is nothing 'street' about the cars they race... roll cage, wheelie bars, parachutes, trailering their cars to the races.

The second and HUGE flaw is they are encouraging street racing/law breaking... I guess they get around that with the disclaimer at the beginning of each show.

I'm also guessing this will (should) be the end of the show.

The driver of the other vehicle in the race, Irael Valenzuela, 39, of Los Angeles, was sentenced Monday to one year in jail and five years' formal probation, according to the district attorney's office.

Valenzuela entered a no contest plea Dec. 22 to two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

Valenzuela, who has appeared on the Discovery Channel's street racing show "Street Outlaws," was racing Balyan in a Nissan GTR.

This year's episodes are premiering in Feb. I have no comment given it is so out there to promote this kind of activity. However, Breaking Bad was one of the best fictional series ever to hit TV. I watched every episode. Reality shows are scripted, so honestly, how far from fiction?

I read through the link you posted and checked a few others.

Judge did not play games. Both cars ordered to be destroyed. Murder mentioned as the charge in some of the other links.

One year in the slammer for the owner of the Mustang who "only" was the flagman, for manslaughter, not the driver.

scottmandue: overlap on my post.

Even if he only does half his sentence, it's a whole more than the affluenza kid got for killing four people and maiming two others.

Many of the "street outlaws" are license holding NHRA members. The NHRA has taken a very dim view of this activity, even if it is staged, and has written formal letters to everyone they have identified as being a member who has been on the show. The NHRA is yanking licenses from these guys.

If you watch the show that is pretty obvious... when they do the races common sense tells you they couldn't run a full on pro mod round robin with out attracting the po-po.

But from the shows I have watched there is never any mention of where/how they are racing. If anything there is a nod-nod wink-wink we are 'outlaws' vibe.

In a perfect world every major city would have a drag strip set up for weekend amateur racing... we had one here for a little while:

Lost Terminal Island Drag Racing Strip Could Make a Comeback - Car Culture - Curbed LA

But of course in our litigious world something like that is nigh on impossible.

Yup. NHRA officials are fully aware of that, but couldn't care less - it's the promotion of street racing that they will not allow from their members.
