Video on iPhone - Is SD Okay?
Looking for a new family cellphone plan. T Mobile has an unlimited plan, $70 for the first phone, $50 the second, $20 the third and fourth. The hitch is that video is downrezzed to 480p or SD. Will I even notice the downrezzing when watching video on iPhone?

I have a similar plan.
Streaming services like youtube / Netflix / HULU / Pandora etc don't count against your data, big plus. The video is fine. Don't forget the number, in this case 480, is the height resolution. 16/9 480p is 853x480. iPhone 4 display is 960x640. iPhone 5 is 1136x640 and since it does not stretch effectively the same as the 4 when viewing fixed aspect data like a video. The 6 is 1334x750 Only the 6 plus is full 1080, 1920x1080

Thanks!
Now the only thing I need to convince myself of is that T Mobile's coverage is good enough.

The plan the op mentioned is new. It's unlimited everything. I personally notice a huge difference between SD and even 720p on my iPhone 6plus. SD looks blocky and like someone smeared oil on the screen. It's nasty. Iirc Tmo throttles FaceTime down to nasty video too.
I personally wouldn't get T-Mobile. I have Sprint and where I live it works great and it's cheaper. I think Tmo gives 30 days to return your phones if you decide you don't like it so maybe give it a try? |

What happens is not that TMobile is sending down sampled video, they throttle the connection so streaming services like NETFLIX detect a slower connection and they deliver their SD version instead of the HD.
TMobile unlimited streaming is called Binge On. If you don't like the throttled video just disable Binge On. Normal data rates will then apply. Binge On does not affect WIFI streaming.
