Best New Rock Music?
Lately I have been very excited over the out pouring of really good new rock music coming out. What bands is everyone here listening to?
Personally here are some of my new favorites.. Disturbed The Strokes, (best band ive heard in years) The Hives, (reminds me of early Iggy Pop) Coldplay (a little too emotional for me, but very good none the less) Hoobastank (Im biased becaused I grew up with them, saw them play in backyards and small clubs for years, but loved their music regardless) |

I've been getting in to a lot of punk bands that aren't so famous. Like Simple Plan, Finch, Autopilot off.... Most anyone from the Atticus compilation and warped tour....although I doubt anyone has a clue what I'm talking about...

Well considering they grew up WITH Incubus in Ventura County, and they were all friends, I guess they do sound alike.

Good vibes...
ALL music is good for the soul...but if you can't play it, and perform it LIVE then you loose the 'vibe" the group is trying to create. Just saw the Stones, again and it's like poetry seeing keith and Mick !!!

I mean, can you imagine how much the Beatles would suck today if they had stayed together through the 70's and maybe even after Lennon's death? The Stones used to have an energy (that I and many others refer to as "The Spirit Of Wrestling") that was drained years ago, and is happily alive and well in bands such as the Hives and Queens Of The Stone Age. I'm sorry if this is offensive to any of you. When it comes to music, I am a very passionate man, lol |

And FYI, I am a huge fan of Sinatra, Elvis, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, BB King, as well as James Brown, Glenn Miller, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Leadbelly and pretty much all Motown. I assure you I know what I am talking about. How many concerts have I seen? Hundreds! Thats the benefit of being raised by a hippie father... |

[B] No offense, but don't you think the Stones should call it a day? There's nothing more embarassing then seeing a 60 year-old Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (the walking corpse) up on stage performing new music that cannot even compare to albums like Let it Bleed and Sticky Fingers, (and to a lesser extent, Tattoo You) I mean, can you imagine how much the Beatles would suck today if they had stayed together through the 70's and maybe even after Lennon's death? So...if you are a fan, why would an entertainer, ie Rolling Stones, contemplate retirement, especially after grossing $100 million on their latest tour ?? These are very polished performers, who enjoy their craft, and DO take what they do very seriously. Multiply your concert experience by the factor of "10" and because of my trade. I've seen quite a few performers over the last 4 decades, and for fans to call for their retirement is utter "non-sense"... I will leave it at that...BTW, this is not a personal matter, just my personal opinion.. |

AGAIN
Curtis U trying to sell us the Stones again?.... NO ONE IS A BIGGER STONES FAN THAN I AM, been listening since 65. Yet I argued with Curtis on the other Board that the Stones became nothing but ENTERTAINERS after Altamont. In other words they lost the juice, the cutting edge, were over the hill and out the door. I even used the same Album "Let it Bleed" as an example.
THANK U JARED at least someone agrees with me on this Board. Oh Jared the only decent stones album in the past 25 years was "Some Girls" after that only bits and pieces of ANYTHING memorable has come out by them. The last GREAT tour by them was the 1969 Tour, they were so far over the edge on that tour the Hells Angels were inspired to beat someone to death at Altamont (It came after they performed Sympathy for the Devil and were doing Under My Thumb). Since then they are nothing but the English version of the Beach Boys living on the Moldy Oldies. Oh someone looks even more moribund than Keith now and thats Sir Mick Jagger. The only real reason they Tour is that Keith gets them off the sofa, cause he still likes to play. Sir Jagger only thinks PAYDAY, as if he needs it. U wana talk about old guys who still have the juice when they play....try Tom Waits, Neil Young, and even Bob Dylan (he has more style changes than a cat has lives). On the maybe list is Pete Townsend of the Who, John Fogerty ex CCR, Robbie Robertson ex The Band, and Don Henley ex Eagles. The guy who has gone Easy Listening is Eric Clapton....along with Sir Paul McCartney. Knighted by HM the Queen you know lads. Last edited by tabs52; 11-19-2002 at 11:58 AM.. |

Tabs,
I agree with you on the subject of the "juice" Townshend still has it, The Who, in any incarnation are still well worth over $100 a ticket to see. I think it was Van Morrison who actually coined a term to describe the "juice". He called it the "YAARGH" Not sure what it means though, perhaps a Gaelic/Welsh/Scots term? a little off topic, but it still boggles the mind as to why McCartney was knighted and not Harrison or Lennon. I believe they contributed more to society than Sir Paul did... Maybe im just misinformed as to the criteria for knighthood. Oh Wait! didn't Lennon give back some sort of knighthood to protest the war? If i may add a second note, I was in London the day Harrison died, so i went to Abbey Road Studios, and it was quite an experience to see the vigil that was setup there. People were writing all over the walls of the studio fence, leaving flowers, etc.. I simpy wrote, "All things must pass, RIP George" |

I understand there is a need to make money here. What i am saying is that for that money, I expect to see a damn good show. In my opinion the Stones are not capable of living up to a $368 ticket. I would never pay that much to see a band anyway, except for one show, that will probably never happen, Van Halen re-united with David Lee Roth. THAT, I would pay $368 to see. One band that is unashamed of stating they are sellouts are KISS. I'll see KISS whenever they come to town, and usually pay a little higher than i usually do for tickets, simply because they put on one hell of a show. Im kinda happy that they decided not to stop touring and come back again because they made so much money. |

Watch the movie the "Kids are Allright" which is the WHO documentry. NEVER has any band played with such energy as the WHO. Listen to Live at Leeds.
BTW after Altamont in 1969 the Stones didn't play Sympathy for the Devil again until the 1975 Tour of the Americas. That tells you soemthing right there. In the late 60's the BEATles were awarded some kind of commendation by the Queen? I think money and contribution to the UK through artist achievement gets U a Knighthood (a long distinguished career). I break Musicians/ Songwriters down into 3 catagories. 1. The purely Technical. The guy who plays the guitar great but can't write a decent song. Example Brian Jones of the Stones could play every instrument there was but U have never heard one of his songs, guys who are basically technicans are Jimi Page, Alvin Lee (Ten Years After), George Harrison, Duane Almond and Eric Clapton. 2. The Visionaries: The guy who plays a bad guitar but hears the sound he wants to creat in his head. Example Jim Morison of the Doors couldn't even play an instrument yet the sound that he inspired and created. Other guys in this catagotry are Keith Richards, John Lennon/ Paul McCartney, Pete Townsend, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, John Forgerty, Steve Winwood and the list goes on and on 3. The Visionary and Technical combined: Jimi Hendrix......Louie Armstrong.....Miles Davis........John Coltrane.......... Do I need say more....... |
