I just launched my Kickstarter campaign. Youtube's guitar-related "Doug and Pat Show" just dropped a video episode featuring a new guitar pickup I'm developing. With the NAMM show just days away, it was time to launch....

Very cool Wolfe, couple questions. In the video Doug keeps saying that the pickup isn't height adjustable.
How did you set the height of the pickups you sent to them and how did that height compare to 'stock'?
What difference does it make in the sound?
Are people looking for new p90's and not able to find them?

These are coming from a non-musician by the way, just curious.
Good luck with the venture, I liked seeing how you mod'ed your winding machine.

Good luck with the venture, I liked seeing how you mod'ed your winding machine.

To set the height, I ask for 8 points of measurements... string heights off the body. I then mill down the cover to be about 1/8th inch below that. Adding and matching the arch to the bottom of the cover, for a guitar that I don't have, is very tricky.. a process which will take practice.
People vary the height quite a bit, depending on taste. Lower height usually resulte in a softer, warmer sound that's a bit quieter and subdued. A height closer to the strings is usually more powerful, bright, raunchy... but it does have its drawbacks.

P90 style pickups are still being made. There are also some attempts to put a similar "single coil" pickup in a rout meant for "humbuckers' -- that's where this comes in to play. The other versions cheat by altering the geometry of the coil and magnetic structure, which changes the sound and character. They do this in order to fit it under a cover that fits in the stock mounting "ring" In my creation, I keep the coil and magnetic structure 100% authentic. It's only the mount that's changed a bit... A 60+ year old problem is solved...
