The new base Boxster/Cayman
Like a lot of folks, I wasn't too excited by the announcement that the new Boxster/Cayman were going to turbo 4 cyls. I've owned a few of these beasties and the 7200 rpm shriek of the Flat 6 was fun ! That and the silly marketing ploy using the 718 name to sell the downgrade in cylinder count...
But...Not only does it look really nice, and now follows the normal ranking of coupé being cheaper than the cabrio, the new Boxster base model makes 300hp and 280 tq. Correct me if I'm wrong but that's more than the 987 version of both the Boxster and Cayman S !!! Never mind for now that I'm sure a tuner will have a 50hp reflash in no time, the base model is now stronger than the S was ? Cool !!! And presumably the Cayman will be cheaper than the Boxster, even better !!! Please Porsche make it it sound interesting and you have a performance bargain on your hands!!! |

It is amazing what manufacturers are able to do with turbo 4 cylinders these days. I have a new Ford Edge with the turbo 4 in it and if I didn't tell you, you would think it is a V8!

The turbo 4 in my Escape puts out 250 easily. The new RS Focus is pumping 350! Out of a 2.3l 4. I'm all for small 4 banger turbos! I wouldn't kick a 718 out of my garage just for being 2 cylinders short!
