Can probably learn a lot from the Early 911S Registry forums. Beyond that, Fere's Porsche 911 Story or Ludvigson's Excellence was Expected (the relevant section).

The 911 R hasn't been well documented in one book. There are quite a few books that have info on it, but I can't think of one that tells the whole story. You might try to track down Ernie Wilberg and see what he recommends. He has a site here:
