So you would have to smog your trailered track car or jeep? That's dumb.

I think what is happening is these agencies have done some good by going after the relatively low-hanging fruit - and that was great - but now they are casting about for something to do, and keep coming up with more and more cockamamie ideas which call the reason for their very existence into question. It's like you hired a painter to paint your house. He finishes the house - it looks great - but now he feels compelled to paint your lawn, sidewalks, trees, pets - not so great, and you just want him to go away.

Competition boats are the next target.

The cost to do this crap is substantial and the reduction in emissions is most likely nil to minimal.

Next thing you know they will place a tax on farting, (honor system).

Except for cow farts. That's big business so the cows will get an exemption.

I'm curious how they'd enforce that - being that most tracks are on private land, the cars are not driven to or from on public roads...

The EPA, while originally well intentioned, has become pure E-VIL.

Most likely the same way some states (CA, MA, probably a few others) do with "use tax". In the case of CA they say "we think you brought in 'x' dollars worth of items from out-of-state and since we didn't get CA state sales tax on it, we're billing you based on our estimate - pay up". Yes, this really happens (go to Franchise Tax Board's web site). It happened to me twice. I'm so glad I'm not there anymore.

You can fight it but the burden is on you to prove you DIDN'T bring in stuff from out-of-state. Guilty until proven innocent.

"People may use EPA-certified motor vehicles for competition, but to protect public health from air pollution, the Clean Air Act has – since its inception – specifically prohibited tampering with or defeating the emission control systems on those vehicles."

"In the course of selecting cases for enforcement, the EPA has and will continue to consider whether the tampered vehicle is used exclusively for competition. "

Somehow I don't find, "It's the law but right now we don't plan to enforce it," very comforting.

The goal of every federal agency is to grow its budget. To grow its budget, and agency must show that it controls more stuff.

The EPA is awash with the hairiest, hippiest, tree-huggingiest, eco-terrorist greenies imaginable. Racing is the sport of ignorant rednecks. For them, it is as much about "helping the planet" as it is about punishing the unwashed bible-thumping masses.

Take legal racing away from the masses, and let it become illegal.
Ultimately it's up to the states, no?
If y'all haven't already.

States enforce their own emissions laws anyway. My SC doesn't have the proper emissions equipment. As long as I drive it less than 5000 miles a year I'm ok with PA. I don't see much difference.
