Who else did stupid stuff when they were 17?
As a parent, I don't know what to make of this story. It sickens me what these parents must be going through losing twin brothers to teen age shenanigans... 24 years ago, this could have been me or my friends.
Calgary bobsled track accident kills twin brothers, injures 6 other teens - Calgary - CBC News |
I'm amazed I'm alive, that's for sure.
|
Yes truely sad; there but for the grace of God go I
We sat our twins down and talked about it. For the record I did stupider things at that age..... |
I hate stories like this. I can't even imagine what their parents and their extended family a going through.
Such a stupid loss... But it should be said. There's no way I'd let my son do something like that. He's 20 now and I raised him on my own and I always made sure I knew were he was and what he was doing. |
I'm a lucky SOB, looking back 45 years.
|
The better question is perhaps is there anyone here who didn't do stupid things when they were 17.
A Tragic story... |
Crazy stuff.
I can't imagine what the parents are going through. Strange that the boys came into this world together and went out together. Edit: I am another one of the guys here that was lucky to survive my teens and early 20s... |
Article goes on about how grim the scene was...I can imagine.
Hitting a concrete gate. Will the parents sue? |
I didn't stop doing stupid things at 17, that's for sure.
|
Who didn't do stupid stuff at 17? And 18? And 19-27?
|
You are a liar if stoopid ended at 17.
|
Between cars and motorcycles, it's a miracle that I made it through my teen years.
I feel for the first responders to this one. |
I just turned 51 and still do stupid stuff.
|
I am hoping I didn't use up too much of my luck early on but to be sure I easily could have.
|
I was far worse in my mid-20s than in my late teens. But I sure was lucky to make it to the ripe old age of 44.
|
We all did.
Now my kids are 15 and 19, I'd be mortified if they did what I did. (My Dad had a mortal fear of heights, yet still use to drive me to rock climbing, abseiling, etc) |
Yup, did lots of stupid stuff. My wife says I still do.
This story does bring back some horrid memories. When I was a kid several of us built a toboggan run at a local golf coarse closed for the winter. Over a couple of weeks we slowly built and tweaked it. It was fast. Somehow- and I still do not know how- another group found out about the run and tried it themselves. 4 on the toboggan. 4 in the hospital. One for a long time. Kids do stupid things. All kids make bad decisions- but sometimes the holes in the swiss cheese all line up. My prayers go out to the families. Gary |

I'm not blaming the parents but maybe they should have reined in their boys a bit more. |
I did a few crazy things, but never on that level of stupid.
When I was 17 at 1:00 AM I had to be home or on the job working a customer's project. I was usually too busy working to go out and get in trouble. It is a very sad tragedy. |
Yup, but thankfully none of it ended up on faceplant.com
|
i surely did and am glad that it was not on video.
|
When I was in my teens I would sneak out and meet friends. We would walk to a bridge over the local river, hang out, smoke cigs, and pretend to be cool.
One night we challenged each other to cross the bridge by going UNDER it hand over hand using the girders. Had one of us fallen it would have been very bad. |

Did plenty of stupid stuff my parents didn't find out about until years later... Or not at all!
|
There is stupid, and there is stupid.
|
I looked up the site of the tragic accident on google maps. I was curious how accessible it is.
The Canadian Olympic Park, where the accident occurred, is surprisingly close to a lot of housing and commercial activity. I am surprised this hasn't happened before. That whole complex would have had an irresistible appeal to my 17 year-old self. My heart goes out to the parents. |
Dad broke his back as a kid when they went down a hill in a field. The Toboggan hit a stump.
|
There are residences backing on to the facility. And some residents claimed the gates were not always locked.
Although from the video I saw it appeared they may have used bolt cutters to get in. The police were quite interested in the chain used to keep the gate shut. Someone breaks into my property and gets hurt in the dark, I don't expect to get sued... |
I've read the posts on here... Some of you aren't done doing stupid stuff!
|
That's a tragic story.
I did plenty of stupid stuff when I was 17. Lucky I survived it. |
Young is stupid. Looking back, its like... WTF was I thinking...
Like taking a handful of blood thinners so that a few of us could leave bloody handprints all over the school (the blood is thin enough to come out our pores) while squishing in bloody shoes. We felt woosy. No Duh... |
I was out with a friend on motorcycles one halloween night. No headlight, no helmet, went off the road and into a tree. Had a shiner for a month. Could have broken my neck, literally....
Fortunately I had some very sane mentors in my life that steered me away from hard drugs and alcohol, but that night on the bike could have ended or changed my life big time.... |
i was just talking to my childhood friend last night..(he builds custom cutting boards, so i wanted his input).
we were going over some of the stories that risked life and limb. scary. |
Bobsledding at night sounds like great fun. Sorry about the tragic loss of life and for me stupid stuff didn't cut off after the teen years.
