Look both ways before crossing the street.

That is what we were taught back in the olden days.
Our parents told us that, our teachers told us that, and we did it.

We learned to look both ways and make sure no cars were coming, and then quickly cross the street while it was safe.
AND WE DIDN'T GET FRICKING RAN OVER!!!!!!

Somehow that has all changed.
People cross the street and assume it's safe, they assume cars will stop for them, often they don't even bother to look up from their "happy" facebook or whatever.

They stand in the street and have a conversation, and just figure that cars will go around them.
The casually walk across the street, in no particular hurry, the cars can wait, the cars can stop, no sense looking up or rushing or anything.
The slowest seem to be English as a second language folks. In your face car owners!


So we turn on the news and hear about pedestrians getting run over crossing the street at 2 am, duh.
We hear about darwin award winners getting hit by freaking trains if you can believe it.
Just how stoopid have people gotten to get to this level? How do you get hit by a train?

I've never been his by a car. I will never get hit by a car.

Why? Because I am smarter than a car and I do not put myself in positions where cars can hit me. I learned that in first grade.


Maybe I'm looking at it all wrong. Maybe it's actually a good thing that the idiots get killed off, culling the herd so to speak.

Silver lining, yeah that's the ticket.

Hahahaha... reminds me of some of the countries I've driven in. India is probably the worst. People (sometimes complete families) will slowly walk across a busy highway looking straight ahead. Complete mayhem. Probably a cultural thing.

Here, in America, we have uptight old white men who worry about crap like this and make posts about them. :D

Personal responsibility for ones actions is no longer important.

Whatever happens was caused by the other person or some corporation's defective product and lack of warning labels.

Uptight is a relative term. :)

Cerial, how does a person get hit by as train?
If you pay attention there are clues that tell you where a train is going. You can tell it's exact path if you try!

They can't all be suicides, some of those people were actually too stoopid to take a couple steps to the right or left before that huge LOUD THING that you can see 1/2 mile away gets here in 30 seconds.
It's not like the trains sneak Up on people, they have really loud HORNS!

It is absolutely a cultural thing. I drive through several ethnic neighborhoods going to work where the residents consider it completely normal and acceptable to just wander into the street, no regard for traffic, often while piled with laundry, shopping, 5 gallon water jugs, or a few random kids. They seem to drive like that as well (stop randomly blocking a lane to pick up or drop off something, insert their car randomly into traffic from a driveway, block all lanes while making a u-turn in clogged traffic, etc.

in today's traffic climate.

i've seen stopped cars take off into me..just because the driver looked up from the phone and just started driving when their peripheral caught the green light or the car next to them move.

I've seen guys wearing hoodies just wander into the parking lot without even looking. Their peripheral vision is blocked, yet they make no effort to compensate for that. Mind boggling stupidity.

In California the pedestrain has the right of way.

That doesn't mean pedestrians can just willy-nilly venture out onto a busy roadway.

I do agree though that there is a culture who does not understand the concept of vehicular traffic vs. pedestrian traffic and how that relates to Einsteins theory of relativity.

Those to me are clueless objects taking up space on planet earth...

Pedestrian should have the right of way. The consequence is so one sided.

Trouble is they use it as a force field.

as a tangent I've been seeing ALOT of drivers cruising around w/out their lights on during rain and snow storms. I've flashed them but they have been clueless so far.

1/ I see so many people walking the streets at night dressed in all black.

2/ So many people walking with their head down in a phone, etc.

3/ above and add headphones

The other day I was pulling into a parking lot I saw a mid 20's mom with two toddlers and one in a stroller, walking the sidewalk. One toddler was 1 foot from a very busy street, mom was totally focused on a cellphone, the other toddler was tugging on her pants trying to get her attention. I could hear mom shouting "will you shut the F up for just one minute!" while never once looking up from her phone.

Twice this year I've almost hit pedestrians bolting across intersections dressed in all black. Once a couple with stroller dressed in all black, poorly lit intersection, I had advanced green and they jumped the "Don't Walk", They were were screaming F bombs giving fingers...

Agree.

some from this same culture of not caring turn their right turn signal on when turning left, and left signal on when turning right, why you ask, so you know you can pass on the side the blinker shows. It's scary how some think.

Believe it or not, I almost got hit by a train.

It was a clear sunny winter afternoon.
I was cross-country skiing in the middle of the tracks in Gallop Park aside the Huron river.
That stretch of area is several miles of a long wide open bend with no trees to block the view of approach.

I happened to look back and saw it coming up fast at 60-80mph. Silent.
WTH? Why didn't I hear it?
The engineer should have seen me a mile away.

No time to attempt to walk over the rails.
I leaned over and monkey rolled away.
1,2,3,4 seconds death blazed by.

Like the dumbschits on the movie "Midnight Rider" who killed Sarah Jones on a railroad trestle. I was involved in a TV pilot on the exact same railroad trestle a year earlier. The difference was we had PERMISSION to film there and the trains were stopped while we filmed. Midnight Rider was told NO, and they did it anyway.

One of my friends went to work for a railroad company as a safety officer. The main part of his job was talking to the families of people that were killed by a train. He tried to talk them out of suing the railroad company. He also went to schools and civic groups and had a presentation on railroad safety when approaching an intersection and staying away from the tracks.

He got the job because the man that had that job before him was killed when a train hit is car. Really.

Trains don't push noise ahead of them, you don't hear them until too late. I used to do some survey work on tracks and you always had someone with you watching behind you. You will not hear the train. Like a bullet, you hear it when it went by.
In Costa Rica I was always amazed with the people, walk in the street with perfectly good sidewalk just feet away. Driving in the country at night and come up on Ticos laying in the street looking at the stars. I have been passed on uphill curve at the crest, lots of car wrecks in that country.
