Do you need/have a dishwasher (the appliance)
My wife and I live in a small two bedroom one bath unit with a small kitchen. It is just the two of us so the dishwasher gets run about once a week. The dishwasher is about ~10 years old and wasn't top of the line when it was installed thus we pretty much wipe/wash the dishes and silverware,toss them in there and it rinses/sanitizes them for us once a week.
Wife keeps hitting me up with "why don't we get rid of that thing and use the space for storage?" because we pretty much pre-wash the dishes before we put them in there anyway. Growing up seems like we always had a dishwasher, every house I have visited has one... they seem kinda obligatory... What does the PPOT brain trust think... could you/would you/do you live without a dishwasher?

Have one. Do not use it. Get rid of it.

Ours has been dead for a few years but we don't have enough space to dry the dishes we wash by hand... so it is still used, but as a drying rack

I just bought a new KitchenAid, SS cuz my g/f wants to move in and she wanted all SS appliances.
She uses it, but for me it's a drying rack...I wash my dishes after I use them and put them in the KA. Good idea...use yours for storage...as I do.

Yea, we have one. It is just the wife and myself and we rinse off the dirty dish after use and never put stuff in the sink. Just drop it in the dishwasher. About once a week we run it. Then we play the game of whoever opens the dishwasher with clean dishes inside has to put them away.

I have kids, mine runs every day !!!
I even had this genius idea for the new house to have 2 dishwashers, and less shelf space. One dirty, one clean, rotate.... it would save me 10 min a day off unloading dishes from the clean into the cupboards ;-) (have kids, laugh at my 10 minutes a day idea later) That idea did not pan out as well as I thought it would (you never have all you need in the clean one anyway) So no, if you don't need a dishwasher, then turn it into shelfspace or a wine cellar (if you or your wife drinks)! As far as using one for long term storage of dishes, I would not unless it's never been used, they smell funny eventually if not used regularly (stagnating water maybe? dunno, it just does). 2 Dishwashers is becoming common in higher $$$ houses around here...
Ours gets run daily at a minimum, now with thuys dad and stepmom here it seems like its getting run 2x a day! How do two people double the dish load? |

My brother and sister and I grew up without one so doing the dishes was just another chore.
Even today is seems weird for me to use our dishwasher but with kids it gets used a lot (they've got it easy...).

~~~~~~~~ Mine does, also...disgusts the g/f so she runs it when she's here. I'm a bachelor, what do I care?...I like the smell of my shop.
My sister used to live in a small house by herself. Easier to wash by hand when cooking for only one person.
She used the upper rack of the dishwasher as her spice rack. |
my folks raised 6 kids without one.
We don't have one and it's not a big deal. I am the dishwasher although the kids help once in a while.
Have a 2 drawer dish drawers from F&P. 10 years old. Used both drawers when kids were still in the house. Only use the top drawer these days. Runs once/twice a week. We play the "you opened and it's clean, so you have to put away" game too!
Buy it, use it. We use ours daily and loves it. but then, we are lazy bums. no pre wash necessary unless its big chunks of food. Just make sure you clean or clean the drain screen once a week or two.
As I said, I wash dishes as I use them...when not, I wash dishes to get the crap out of my fingernails.
My wife hand washes the dishes, then puts them in the dishwasher and washes them again.
