Flat fender Jeep questions
I remember some here has extensive knowledge of these little guys?
I got a bug up my ass about those little Jeeps (MBs, Willys) now that I have some additional storage space. I added a little more then 1200 Sq' of storage/garage space at my rental. I have always wanted one since I was a kid. Now its time to buy the Jeep before my wife discovers the additional free space, then it will no longer be free. Inspector just gave the OK to pour the foundation this afternoon  I know nothing about those little Jeeps but do know this, I don't a project. I really like a "driver" with the larger motor conversion installed. I started reading on the net but its just info overload. One of my question is, if a larger motor is installed, will it rip up the transmission and transfer case? Not interested in diesel torque, but a vehicle I can drive down the fwy at 55 or 60. Am I asking for trouble here? Small V6? What do I need to look out for with these conversions? I really like to mess around with this thing along with my kids as they get a little older. Great way to find out how things works because I expect them to tear into it and get things fix when it breaks (first, dad's gotta figure out how it works  )

I can see you caught the jeep bug.
I assume we're talking cj2/cj3? Find a good runner, low rust, and just fix it back up to it's former glory. Because it all starts with the engine swap. Then you do axles, leaf springs, and running 37 inch beadlock mud tires. haha

Jeeps of that era have really low gearing to make up for the lack of engine TQ, also to do what they were designed for............. go over rough terrain and climb hills. Like to the tune of 4:56 and lower. The drive train is pretty robust considering the power plant, but some of the really early trans do not have a synchronized 1st gear. They have 2-peice rear axles that are prone to breakage when dropping in larger engine.
Lastly, obviously rust ......................................eveywhere

I had a YJ with a four banger about 10-15 years ago. I gave it a pretty good beating out in the desert. It was plenty of power but did lack HP going up a long grade. I knew they weren't designed to do. I am not looking for the prettiest, but a drive without rust, if possible. I don't care about period correct with all the pretty bolts and such, but a solid vehicle. The MB, with the smaller head light. The CJ2 or 3s look like Don Knotts but I am OK with it. They are also built to mil spec and more robust? |
