Welders burn

I'm lying on the couch tonight with potatoes on my eyes. Not fun. I bumped the sensitivity on my self-dimming mask and didn't realize it. 3 hours worth of welding today. Ughhh

Nasty. Feels like sand in the eyes, doesn't it?

Did bumping the sensitivity make it slow to dim or was it an adjustable darkness thing?

Tearing up, sand in my eyes feeling, and splitting headache. I've had it before. The mask was accidentally bumped to slow the dim time.

Been there done that. Go to the ER....they'll put some drops in to numb them. The drops won't last long and they won't give you any to take home (they will give you some pain meds) but it's blessed temporary relief.
My eyes healed quickly.

I think the eye drops are called Welder's Friend or some such.

Never had the eye thing. Although once I got a nasty "sun burn" on my arms between the tops of my leather gauntlet gloves and a short sleeve T shirt I was wearing. Was a hot humid day and I thought I could get away with it. Nope.

Retina burn....essentially sunburn on the retina.

The ER can help, it will heal quickly, a couple of days and the gravel in the eyeball feeling will pass.

Set the speed to darken on your helmet faster and a little darker.

Horrible feeling that, had it twice, not good....

Went to urgent care 3 minutes from my house. Numbed my eyes, gave me antibiotic drops, and something for the pain. They did give me a bottle of the numbing solution to take home.

I think you mean cornea... but yes, it is basically a sunburn.

You lucky bastard! When I got poked in the eye they wouldn't give me the numbing solution to take! She left it in the room while she went out for something and I really thought about pocketing it!

Eye pain is the worst! I feel for ya man!

I've been known to swipe stuff like that when desperate - and yes, I went to confession the next Sat. afternoon.

Auto switching weld visors are not good for extended term use, i.e. welding for hours on end.

They were banned in the weld shop I used to work at. Some were fine, many were not, and it is too big a risk to take with your eyes.

They often switch too slowly, which is not a problem for casual users, but is a big problem for production welders.

Cocaine is generally considered to be the ultimate (and original) local anesthetic in that it works really well and provides vasoconstriction which extends it's effects...which also accounts for how cocaine addicts' nasal septums turn to dust.

I feel your pain and raise it a bit: welding on a rusty old 1970 240Z (even when you remove as much rust as you can) tends to shoot out big, hot sparks that have a nasty habit of going for your crotch.

I wear a welding jacket, gloves, hat, along with the helmet, but I'm in the market for welding trousers.

Interesting, I have been thinking about picking up an auto darkening helmet. However, I am quite used to using my old flip front , been doing it like this for 20 years now.
Wonder how many flashes your eye can take before you sun burn them. Occasionally, when I am tacking something, I will catch a little flash, never seems to bother me much .
I am careful now though, I flashed myself really good when I first started, and I never want to feel that pain again . I think I'd take a good kick in the nuts before welders flash .

I've used an auto darkening helmet for long days without any issue. You just have to make sure it's set dark, and fast. Mine is usually sensitive enough that it will darken even before I'm ready for it to at times.

I thought an auto darkening helmet would protect you from this (filter the UV) even if the shade was set light and there was an instant that it was not dark?
