901 to G50 to PDK
There is NO point to this post sans my story, my day, my happiness:
Sunday was one of those magical days in the northeast when we start to feel the warm sun reminding us that spring is around the corner. I had several invites to go to a pre- C&C with a buddy looking to sell his wonderful 944, but the work around the yard (down branches from a recent storm) took priority. My chain saw ran out of gas so I went to refill but realized I needed 2 cycle oil additive...so I took a break. I decided to take the 1970 out of its winter rest. My 911T/S was put about an inch from my 2010 Turbo so I could fit an extra car in the three bay garage. I jacked up the rear by the engine case (hope in hindsight that its not a trick that damages things...I've seen it done many times before). With the cars now separated and off their battery tenders, I cranked the 911 for the first time. A few pumps of gas and she caught and came to life. Yeah! Hardly even a puff of smoke. A minute of holding the revs and she felt ready. A few minutes into a slow gentle start the oil came up to temp and I let her rev to 4K...got into 4th and drove down one of my favorite roads in 4th hugging through the turns and down the straights at 80 mph...I always love taking a 40mph turn at 2x the limit. As i approached the next towns limits i grabbed the parkway for the trip back up...a 2 lane scenic parkway where the little car revved strong and pulled to 100mph. I stopped by the hardware store for the 2 cycle additive (glad I remembered). In the parking lot I got 2 comments and a thumbs up...and it was covered in a light storage dust. When I got home I left it out as the storage task is a bit tedious and the chain saw was still calling my name. So I did some yard work for the next 2 hrs. As I finished the work I headed to back to the house. As my wife and I were putting the things away she asked if I was going to drive her 2010 Turbo. So, with her prompting me, I said yeah, sure I should exercise it while separated from her storage mate. So with my wife guiding me away from the wall, I am headed down the driveway and slowly down the road to get her warm. I decide to head north on a single lane windy road. I forget all about the sport/sport plus button as I haven't driven her in months and was slowly warming her up. I'm doing 30 in PDK 7th and slowly get her up to 90mph without the car shifting gears. What a wild ride versus slowly rowing the 901 trans. 90 feels like nothing. In my 70, the car is alive, buzzing, noisy...heavy steering. The brakes need forethought and calf strength. In the 997 Turbo, the ceramics grab and stop without thought. Stupendous technology. Big huge wheels/tires/brakes...love this part of the car. THEN I remember the Sport Plus button and it begs me to pull a pass of two cars ahead (yes, over the double yellow) but with a ton of straight line and vision (plus the 530hp makes the task a bit of a joke versus - any other car on the road). Within seconds I am at 100mph and the car chimes (I set it as a reminder to just be aware). A few more miles and turns and I am home, having slowed down for the last two miles to let her cool and oil to slowly corse through all her veins. With the help of my wife, I back her into the garage. Ten minutes later, the 1970 is parked and the garage is looking like the winter storage it has become. Buzz, buzz buzz...goes my Text and my friend who is selling a 1973 911T with 46K miles tells me I can stop by...so off I go in my 1991 C4. Somewhere between the 1970 911 and the 2010 Turbo is this car - actually it is right in the middle oddly enough 1970 +20yrs + 1991 + 20 yrs + 2010. This car is a daily driver, recently purchased from Indiana. RS Seats, Bilstein suspension, Cup 1s, Chip and Cat Delete. The car is strong and our winter Porsche. The perfect car for my wife and daughter and my weekend errands. The car is just perfect, like the 1970 it is NOT blazingly fast, but loves the 60-80mph range. Both of the older cars have tricked out suspensions - lowered and stiffer and that makes them awesome drivers. They both have a lot of noise (the 911 much more than the 964 even with its Fabspeed system). The 964 is well behaved, fast out of the corners, balanced, sure footed and inspiring. Again, much more like the 1970 as it has little to no low end torque, but at 4K - 6K they are both in their element. I arrive at my buddies to see the 1973 911 for Sale. Long story short, it is a no sale for me...but crazy car (the best under carriage I have ever seen, super engine, no leaks and everything is just right...but something about the roof isn't right, and there is no history to explain it). No need for another as I have a project or 2 already up my sleeve. I am going to finish up my post about driving three great 911's as I remember I forgot to plug the Tender into the 70! |

I agree and really have a heads up long range driving vision (I scan and drive heads up, looking way down the road...that is key), but I agree - stupid move.
However, picture this, single lane road each way (2:30pm - great light for driving). On the right is a large reservoir...on the left is a forest. Zero houses for a good amount of time. Great road, a few switchbacks and a straight here and there. That said, have you punched a 997.2 TT when already doing 40mph? I think it was all of 100 yards...but you are right. I usually don't drive too aggressively, I get that out in DE days which are the best place to play. A local road where neighbors can see you acting stupid, cops and accidents keep my wild side in control. I wish I found DE when I was younger. Great idea (bc it is mine) the local PCA clubs should 'discount the DE rate' for under 25 to get the young enthusiasts in the right environment to drive and get it out of their systems. When I was a kid I was a complete ASS..now I am only an ass (and that is rare as I am now older). |

Thanks. I really do not pass if not safe. I have way too much to lose.
Speed doesn't kill- accidents do. And they can happen at any speed. |

Be careful! You might crest a hill and find a bunch of gravel on the road.
