930 kms! And I thought my 318 km 4 hr (expecting 5 1/2 hr) drive was ambitious.

Seriously, everything I have read says to expect lots of washboard with a lot of roller coaster curvy roads so take your time. Not to forget the occasional road washout & mountain pass. And from what everybody says, driving at night is very ill advised in Namibia.

I have been reading up on braai cooking. Adult beverage. Wood. Hot. Meat. What am I forgetting?

Mine's all pavement

I did some night driving between Johannesburg and Durban. It was terrifying. Hundreds of people, dressed in black tip to toe, walking on the road. And cattle, goats, and other assorted animals. Never again!

Doing well. In Namibia in particular, wood is a very important part of the braai ritual and you will find their firewood to be of really awesome quality. Down here in SA sadly firewood has largely been replaced by the convenience of charcoal, but in Cape Town in particular you'll still get a lot of "Rooikrans" wood, which is great for a braai.

Just never make the mistake of thinking burgers or hot-dogs are a substitute for meat!
