Cool tech. Maybe the AL welds looked poor because the guy was going too fast or settings weren't ideal.

LASER welding isn't easily evaluated by eye (unlike MIG/TIG). We do literally miles of LASER welds every day and without destructive testing or cut and etch or XRay inspection you're left to guessing. It's a very different process and the performance of "visually questionable" welds will often surprise you.
