I'm thinking about getting the TT wrapped...has anybody here done it?
I'm thinking of turning this:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1457987384.jpg into this: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1457987414.jpg I've always wanted a red turbo but new paint will set me back $10-14K. I've got a quote for 3M Gloss Dragon Fire Red wrap to be applied to the entire car minus the rear vents and roof for about $3K. I realize it's not permanent but I'm told it "lasts" about 7 years if the vehicle is garaged routinely which mine is. Plus I put on maybe 2-3K kms per year, driving it occasionally from April to October. Pros/Cons/Thoughts from the PPOT?:p |
Do it! With a wrap you won't hurt the resale value of the car and the right to change your mind is worth the money.
|
I say go for it as well. A buddy of mine is closing in on a speed yellow 996 gt3 and planning on getting it wrapped right off the bat. Can't really go wrong. :)
|
Black is a good color to wrap with red vinyl too. The engine compartment being black on a red car will still look good, as would the door sills.
You can go really wild on a wrap, if you are so inclined, viper green, orange, Gulf livery, pink pig livery, hello kitty, whatever. Should not hurt the underlying paint. You can P-shop it to see how it would look. I have thought about wrapping my Miata in Phoenix Red or some other shade of orange. |
There's no down side to "Wrapping" and I'm thinking about doing my own 911.
There was some talk about it ruining the paint but if it did that then you needed new paint anyway. Just go for it! But shop around for your wrap. 3M have kits that are sold in After Market parts shops but these are very expensive. |
Mike (lubemaster) did his Targa
|
Go to Lamborghini Calgary and talk to Michael (tell him Bob sent you) they do a lot of highend cars. Check this one out while there, one of the best wrap jobs I've ever seen
2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series - Lamborghini Calgary |
Do a search in the 911 tech forum. Someone wrapped an SC. The car looks great. He even did the door jams.

Alex, sent you a timely PM

I wrapped my Targa. It had a bad respray when I got it and needed paint, but didn't want to spend that kind of cash. I cleaned up the rough spots and wrapped it with 3M 1080 sterling silver. Most people don't know it's wrapped unless I point it out (most think it's paint). The wrap holds up well to normal abuse.
It was more difficult to do than I thought it would be. If I did it over, I'd pay somebody to do it. |
Subscribed! Please keep this thread updated if you decide to do it. I'm close to wrapping my TT in continental orange or GT3 RS orange. It's red now, but I love orange, and I've never seen an orange TT. I just don't have the balls to pull the trigger....yet.

So... what is the $$ to wrap a car?

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1458142534.jpg That would be a very unique and killer look on a 997TT! Black wheels too? I'll probably get mine done in two weeks but I'll definitely update the thread when that happens! |

Plasti-dip it.
|
^^^Can you come over and help me dip it? It's a little on the heavy side!
LOL! |

Not sure if you're being sarcastic with the green font. You put it in a spray gun. I haven't done it myself, but I'm considering matte black for one of my projects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J6rRj98A5s |
^^^I was being sarcastic....but wth, I didn't know that you could do this....interesting!
|
Spraying with plasti-dip is an option. Easier to clean and reshoot if it gets peeled up. But... Can't was it with any abrasives.

For Alex:
Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of the wrap in-process. I think it took me ~40 hrs of actual wrapping (with probably 2x that in prep) and there were a couple of "re-do's" because I made a few mistakes. I was into this for ~$375 in wrap materials (not counting prep materials). Here's one pic of the car entering our local Cars and Coffee event. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1458183950.jpg The silver is wrapped. The black lower rockers/front/rear valence is paint (Rustoleum satin black over textured truck bed liner) to make rock chip repair relatively easy. Front valence has cut-outs in place of the fog lights for ducting air to the oil cooler. One thing I like about the wrap is that I don't worry about messing up an expensive paint job. I figure if somebody scratches a door or fender that I'll just redo that section. |
I'd consider a wrap but the rain gutters on a coupe just seem to scream major pain in the ass.
|
Do it! I used to not be a fan, but the vinyl has gotten really good in recent years! And on a car that nice, please pay someone. I have years of experience applying vinyl, and I thought wrapping a 930 was a major pain in the ass and I wasn't happy with how it turned out.
And Craig, do it! We've had some pretty cool wraps done on customer cars. I'll see if I can find the photo of the 991 we had done recently. |
Satin White wrapped 991 Turbo S cab. Looks killer in person, and you really can't tell it's not paint!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1458196738.jpg

It was originally silver, and then had a bad silver re-spray on top. (It's a '75 Targa 911S but not one of the silver anniversary models. I does have the factory hard-top!)

Thanks Peter.....a whole bunch of links to other videos!
I'm now tending more towards a Red Chrome wrap, as in this 911 Carrera: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51V07IeQn2s |
I've seen the red chrome on an MB, looks killer, but it shows scratches like a mofo. Have to be careful about how you wash and dry the car. Like not with a towel of any kind.
|
^^^Ah, shyte!...thanks for the heads up!
|
Well, she's going in tomorrow! I'm going ahead with the red metallic G203, like the wrap on this Bim:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1458332733.jpg I'll get her back in about a week and hopefully no issues!:p |

I was going to sand her down and repaint her but I didn't have the $8K-10K. Had it done for under $2K and when I take it to cars and coffee folks can't believe it. I kept it Grand Prix White. I think it looks good. Scott has seen it and drove it - he's an honest guy. Scott? what do you think? Its not Mint, or Concurs but she's a nice 3 footer! |
Lubey... After the wrap, how does it fare with sun exposure? Any curling or stretching m/peeling at the edges? Did you pull the seals and wrap under them?
|
My 930 has fiberglass fenders, bumpers, and hood. Any concerns with wrapping fiberglass?

And she sure does drive nice. |
