Golden age of F1
Came across an awesome video dealing with the F1 turbo era of the mid 80's - specifically engine tech. Video quality is not great, but really a very cool video with great behind the scenes footage.

It's crazy to think back on how those guys drove mostly one handed back in the day, with mega horsepower to boot... and way more exposed (looks like half their body was protruding from the cockpit) which probably was an incentive for cleaner driving.... The classic Dijon battle was something to behold, Senna's laps in monaco too... Too bad HD had not been invented then !

The early '80s is when I got into F1 and loved the cars and drivers back then. Really enjoyed watching Prost, Piquet, Patrese, Alboreto and Arnoux and even Cheever.
Loved the look of the BT52 ![]()

I thought this thread was going to be about Stirling Moss, Fangio, Jackie Stewart, etc.
Now THAT was the 'golden age' of F-1. |

Too many oldfarts are no longer with us. In those days, one really had to work at it to find any media coverage. I did like the Turbo Era tho. Driving one of those things with 1100-1500 hp setting at your back must have been something. Now days, I don't give a rip. What I really think would get deleted by the mods.

When I clicked on the thread I too thought I was going to see some cigar-shaped F1 cars. Although before my time I love the era and the personalities. I miss watching Legends of Motorsport on Speedvision.
I can't really get into F1 anymore - I think I watched one or two races last year.

What a terrific video.
The Cosworth guys were just realizing what Porsche had found out a bit earlier: That crankshaft vibrations need to be addressed and the crankcase need to be much stronger in a turbo engine. |

Great video! I loved Keith Duckworth's comment: "I think that in a racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, in general, the better its performance will be."
One of my personal "Golden Ages" of F1 was the mid-'90s, with those glorious 3.0L V12s. Some of the sweetest internal combustion music ever made...

Those Cosworth Fords were pretty bad IIRC. Didn't McLaren use them after Honda, before Mercedes?
Edit: ^ Nevermind. I see it was a V-8 Ford HBD7 Last edited by rusnak; 03-14-2016 at 01:38 PM.. |

More engine + less traction + less aero + pretty cars = better racing. Something current F1 seems to be going away from.
I think there's room for green tech. I think KERS is pretty cool. Front wings that look like origami, not so much.

I just loved how "basic" things were at the time. They seem to be working in a facility that is not that much better than a shed, and everything is done by hand. Imagine how state of the art ECU's and cabon fibre must have seen at the time! Imagine, no CAD, no computer simulation, no FEM, no CNC...

In the link given by the OP. I was interested to see around the 1:12 mark a very young Ross Braun working as an aerodynamicist on the Beatrice Ford team.
Les Do you suppose that young man was dreaming of the day when a car bearing his name would win a F1 championship? Best

I got a kick out of them worrying about someone breaking into the line between the US-Britain to steal the info being transmitted between the sites. Hackers? I too thought this would be more about the late '50's, early '60's years too, but thoroughly enjoyed watching the whole thing. I can't imagine anyone thinking that any good data would be gained from testing in such cold conditions (6* below freezing ![]() Thanks for posting the link!
