Well it was my first car so not much explaining to do. Of course it was the most fun for me..I was sixteen and it was 1986. Zero to hero...Saved every penny working on cattle ranches during the summers, then a few years boxing groceries at Albertsons. 1967 muscle goodness..327, M22 Rock crusher. Couldn't explain the petite foot prints on the headliner, passenger side, to my mom who noticed and I hadn't he-he. Ahhh the joy's of youth. Not much in the handling department, most certainly should have died knowing what I know now about sidewall strength and body roll. But here I type, life's great.-WW

It's a toss up between the P6 Rover (first car. Totaled it, and nearly me.) and the TR250. (because a car that looks like that ought not to be that stupid fast).

Ive been trying to come up with a post for this thread for a long time. I have had some fun cars and driven a lot of fun cars that I did not own.

My wife and I in 1992 drove our 1975 308GT4 from NY state to Nevada to participate in the Virginia City Hill Climb. We clocked over 10,000 miles in 3 months. We camped, placed in the hill climb, drove through torrential rain storms, and returned home through snow blizzards and frozen roads. We still own the car.

The "most" fun ever? A 1974 Alfa Romeo Alfetta. I owned one when I was 20 something.

Brilliant & well balanced. Much better than the coupe.

1986 Jetta GLI 16v - tight with a revving engine, couldn't stay under 80, got five tickets
1988 944 Turbo - on rails, fast, hit 175 on highway 15 near Hemet CA and it felt safe
1991 BMW e34 535i - loved the smooth German sedan, so much I owned three 535i's
2015 GT3 - absolute freak, feels like you're driving Kobe Bryant down the court on a fast break

My uncle was an engineer for Toyota, in the R&D department. He took home all sorts of experimental vehicles that were never built for the public.

One day, he brought a 16-valve DOHC Tercel. They actually built and sold that one. He tossed me the keys and told me to do my worst. I think I put 100 miles of torture testing on that thing in around 10, ripping up and down the hills of El Cerrito.

Close second would be my buddy's BMW 2002 tii. It was almost as quick as the 914-6, but had massive understeer. I'd light the front tires up all the way up the freeway onramps.

Cool thread. Having never driven an open-wheeler, I can't imagine the fun with Motion's FA! :eek: I have been very lucky to have owned and/or driven many really great cars. Not all are what I would call 'fun' to drive. In that category, it is really tough to beat a 911 and my old 1971 911 2.5L is at the top of my list (and most other early 911s and a few GT3s close behind):

Next was a friend's Peugeot 205 T16. Fun from the standpoint that it was just a totally inappropriate car for the road. A true Group B homolgation car that had the build-quality of a kit car. It was crazy. If it could've talked, it would have said, 'so these sissyass paved roads are all you've got for me? I weep for you Monsieur.'

What?!? I guess I missed that thread. Interesting, so no fun on the street? Why, too much car with limits too high or just too little compromise for driving on real roads or...??

This one is easy to drive fast, the speeds and risks are higher which makes it a little more serious fun than just fun.

The most fun city driving car I ever had was an Alfetta, it made my wife drive fast.
The balance with the rear transaxle, the minimum unsprung weight ( inbord rear disk brake and Didion suspension) made the ride quality nice and the ability to go over speed bumps like they were nothing. Its short wheel base was critical for its ability to turn in so well in tight slow speed cornering.
Just a amazing car for driving in the city , truly the best.
Reliability not so good and highway was not good.

I bought the car totally stock after selling my 911SC which I tracked lightly. I built the Lotus up as a track only car with a list of track mods too long to list. I had high hopes as I continued to track the car and continued to upgrade the car that I would find a point where I was happy with it...but I never did.

I felt the car was too slow at it's limit and when I tried to carry speed at the level I thought I should have been able to the snap oversteer was often an issue. This was after extensive track level suspension upgrades, various tires, wider wheels, supercharging, etc. I am not the greatest driver but I don't think I am terrible and I never felt confident in the Lotus on the track the way I did in a Porsche.

They are neat looking cars, but they are a bear to get in and out of. I always worried if I wrecked the car on the track, had a fire, and could not open the door because I could not fit out the window, not even close and forget it in a helmet. Also they are very delicate cars. If you hit a parking cone the fiberglass clam will crack and new ones are over $10,000 and perpetually backordered from Lotus. The Toyota engine seems like it should be bulletproof but it really is not as wiped cams and various other issues often occur...the engine was not really built to be run like most people use it for.

So I guess I should say that maybe it was weird to post this in the "What are the most fun cars you have driven" thread. It was fun, but in the end I could never get it to where I was happy with it so I sold it and bought another Porsche. :D
