This is how much the performers were paid at woodstock

Santana got paid less than John Sebastian and almost the same as ShaNaNa? WTF?

Santana were the new kids on the block and no one had heard of them... Yet. After Soul Sacrifice and Evil Ways everything changed.

If the average price of gold in 2015 was $1150/oz and gold was $50/oz in 1969, then total inflation is probably closer to 2300%. Hendrix was paid $414,000, which seems more reasonable.

I don't think performers were paid as much as they are today. And I think a lot of these bands were not as well known THEN as they are now. And in 1969, I don't think anyone really wanted to hear Sha Na Na.

"Santana" was released in August, '69, so they might have been invited to Woodstock because of the popularity of "Evil Ways"? Just speculation on my part. I was 10!

Numbers are pretty close in terms of inflation. Here the "official" site:
CPI Inflation Calculator

Joe Cocker did put in a lot of effort, considering he was at the bottom of the list.

As the folklore goes, Bill Graham was bringing a bunch of major acts from SFO and he shoehorned this unknown Latin jam band into the lineup because he thought it would work and knew their 1st album was being finalized. The rest is history and their first album was released shortly after Woodstock. From back alley late night billing at the Fillmore to superstardom in about 2 weeks. Whew!

Seems like good money for the day. I'd measure it against what kind of car or house you could get at the time to measure the value.

Thanks for the thread, Herr Oberst....great stuff! I never heard of Quill.....interesting!

Cajun Daddy - thanks also for your posts.

Had the first Santana on 8 track - so cool. Santana was (and still is) always the best to listen to before a heavy surf session!

IIRC my dad was an R&D engineer at Hercules specializing in explosives at the time and his gross pay was about $500 per month.

I's say that was pretty good pay for a bunch of dirty hippies

You must be a child of one of those progressive families where the parents tell the kids everything about their (the parent's) situation. The idea that my dad would tell me how much money he was making while I was growing up (in the seventies) makes my head hurt, in between bouts of uncontrollable laughter.

My pleasure guys. In 1969 I was a budding guitarist at age 13 and while Woodstock was happening I was doing Boy Scout stuff at Philmont Scout Ranch in NM. I kept hearing reports on my transistor radio and have been a rabid Woodstock music fan ever since.

There is a car show and street festival this Friday 6-8:30pm in downtown Fontana CA and The Road Dogs band will recreate a bunch of Woodstock era music including Santana, CCR, Joe Cocker, Classics IV, Grand Funk, The Doors, The Troggs, Ides of March, Steppenwolf and more. If you are in the area come on by and say hello.
