bike racks and FENDERS

what do we like?

i just ordered a small front rack, that should hold my daily lunch box.

i'm buying a new road bike, so my Surly will be the total commuter. so fenders. my wife's bike has the worst fenders..i want steel ones right? i think her's are plastic.

got this front rack, since i dont want to run panniers off the front. i will in back for groceries and stuff.

if you aren't into plastic- try this perhaps?

Plastic will do just fine. I mean, you can use aluminum or stainless fenders if you like the look, but there's nothing wrong with SKS (in particular) plastic fenders. I've got them on all my bikes. You will spend a whole lot more time fitting metal fenders than plastic ones, more yet if you are particular about the fender line. A boxy rando bag would probably hold your lunch or whatever, but a Wald rack zip-tied to the rack will work, too. Plenty of options for carrying stuff on a Nitto front rack.

I'd say you do want plastic, such as the aforementioned SKS. They are good quality, lightweight, etc. Everyone who rides should have at least one bike with fenders. My urban grocery getter:

I like Velo Orange stuff. I don't have any of it, mind you, but it sure looks cool!

I have the VO hammered metal fenders on a bike. They take about an hour to install. Look nice. Don't rattle. Functionally, not better than Planet Bike or SKS fenders.

thanks. my wife's are SKS..and thanks for re-suggesting them. maybe it was just the horrors of my memory of installing those darn things.

i will more than likely go this route..

In my experience, fenders tend to hold up until one of several things happen-
- one- a bungee cord that is holding something on a pannier comes loose, gets caught in the spokes and mangles the spokes and fender holders. and
-two- when I get to work and walk the bike through a building, I've got a bad habit of grabbing the bars and standing the bike upright on the rear wheel and rolling it- such as one would do to fit it on an elevator/tight space. That totally grabs the rear fender where it juts down and messes that all up over time.
Also- sometimes fenders interfere with some of my roof mounted carriers, or if I pull the wheels off and stuff the bike in a car.
I have to always remind myself to be careful about these things.

Jacob,

That's a sweet-looking Breezer. Is that one of the early '90s era frames?

^indeed. Built that bike sometime around 1993. I was working at a bike shop at the time. It was set up for off road (and was <21lbs in that config), but later I converted it to urban assault duty.

I have plain bontranger fenders (trek brand) - black plastic. Look to stay clean and do the job fine. Plenty of work for them last week for sure.

Why a front rack?

Aesthetics mostly. I'm getting a rear rack as well. But the front should hold my lunchbox.

Parts of the puzzle are coming in. Got my REI dividends money yesterday which will cover the SKS longboard fenders.

just bought this topeak rear rack and the associated trunk bag that has fold out panniers.

using it for commuting to work on nice days during summer when I don't have to drop kids at school.

http://www.amazon.com/Topeak-63107030-Explorer-Bike-Rack/dp/B000FIE3WI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1458142950&sr=8-1&keywords=topeak+bike+rack

the trunk bag slides into the groove and clips in. very slick setup that doesn't involve bungies.

Be sure to add long mudflaps to the front fender and, ideally, the rear fender. Any strip of rubber, leather, plastic will do. Flared out at the bottom. This keeps spray from the front tire off your shoes and the drive train. Mostly.
