Blues music?
I have to say I personally have never really understood the blues. Much of C&W is blues and that may be why I don't care for C&W music overall. Bruce Springsteen is a major star but so much of his music is just depressing.
We watched the highly intelligent and totally realistic move The Naked Gun 2 1/2 the other night. This scene describes just how I have always thought of the blues. I fully understand many people live in a state of depression and can't just "snap out of it" and it is something I wish we could cure for their sake. Anyway I have always personally felt nothing, absolutely nothing is outside the scope of humor, nothing! I just thought this clip was really funny. Sorry if it offends any of you.

I love Blues music, probably the single most covered genre, then replicated in almost every other form of modern music to date. It's something that's uniquely American in its roots and hardship whether lyrics or sound.
There are times it's deeply moving to me, I enjoy it. Especially very early lyrics that were so daring. In fact the phrase Rock-N-Roll was slang in blues music for sex back then. Dust my broom, squeeze my lemon, too many dishes in the kitchen, on and on.

I think you may be confusng depressing music verses "blues music"
. As Muddy wrote....the blues had a baby, and they called it rock 'n roll....or something like that. The Stones, Allman Bros., early Clapton, etc. are nuthin' but the blues, electrified through a stack of Marshals. Blues music doesn't have to be sad or depressing....I could go on and on, but I'll let others chime in...

I've got a sweet little angel
I love the way she spread her wings Yes got a sweet little angel I love the way she spread her wings Yes, when she spreads her wings around me I get joy, and everything You know I asked my baby for a nickel And she gave me a $20 bill Oh yes, I asked my baby for a nickel And she gave me a $20 bill Whoah, you know I ask her to buy a little drink of liquor And she gave me a whiskey still Oh, if my baby should quit me I believe I would die Oh if my baby should quit me Lord I do believe I would die Yes if you don't love me little angel Please tell me the reason why

Glen, the way you feel about Blues is the way I feel about Jazz, no matter how hard I've tried for it to "take".
But all of these make my heart beat a little faster and elevate my mood plenty!

Blues all day long. As stated, blues isn't necessarily sad or depressing.
Rolling Stones does the blues Jimi Hendrix does the blues Led Zepplin does the blues

+1 "Blues" is a genre that doesn't necessarily have much to do with the words.

Blues music?
The tunes are not bad, just some of the lyrics are so much like the song in the clip. Like some C&W songs like the old David Allen Coe song when he went to pick up his momma from prison while driving a pickup and she got run over by the train.

Born and raised in Mississippi, let me tell you, the Blues isn't something you listen to, it's a cultural experience. Either you get it or you don't. But once you get it, it's in your soul for good. It's far from depressing, in fact it's more of a celebration that things really aren't that bad. I consider myself fortunate to have had the advantage to attend a Blues venue nearly any night of the week in my younger days, one of my favorite local performers was Sam Myers. Try yourself a bit of Sam here and enjoy.

I have listened to Springsteen over the years and NEVER thought of him as blues. Is that what he is classified as now? New Jersey Blues?

I always try to make it to the Double Door in Charlotte when I'm there. Last time I was lucky enough to catch Tinsley Ellis. Definitely worth seeing especially if you're on the East coast where he mostly plays.
