Somewhere between the impressive undertaking above and drinking a beer on the porch is my home gym. Recently added a rower and got some carpet squares from amazon to make a reasonably comfortable area to get in some good exercise. Still have some cutting and gluing to do as well as paint and a tv install but it's a start.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1467037124.jpg

Finally finished my pergola, porch swing, lights, some plants, some random stepping stones and ground cover. Just in time for the 110° weather so we won't go outside

AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH! Someone please just shoot me!!!!!!
While closing the final details on a major appliance purchase, fridge, dishwasher, washer n dryer, the son blows up my phone telling me the sewer pump failed. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...fb049a4217.jpg So class, what will I be doing on my next run of days off??? Seriously, please just shoot me.....nnnooowwwwwwwwwww Sent via Jedi mind trick by the cat |
It's been hot.
The fridge was running all the time. Pulled it out, vacuumed everything underneath, blew out with compressed air, vacuumed again, gave it a bit more side clearance. Much better now. |

Actually felt like progress was being made. All by simply installing the new Hone Depot flat LEDs. Dumped the traditional fluorescent shop light for something cleaner looking and more efficient.

What Did You Do To Your Home Today?
Installed a new dishwasher....
Did a little trick someone might find useful. It seems the new dishwashers insulation pad now seems to resemble a giant cotton ball. Does great for reducing the sound levels however, likes to snag on every single micro splinter under the cabinet. If your cabinet is like mine, rough sawn plywood, a complete nightmare when test fitting the appliance. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...13bf58c13b.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b643509fff.jpg Note the fuzz left from simple test fits that did nothing but snag and pull the insulation cover off and ball it up into a roll of insulation. Here is the FIX: Found a plastic 1/8" cell board at Home Depot. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...b62a47c719.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...93fa7d7b8a.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...f4db9a7ac2.jpg Cut and fit into the opening. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...76d59b5ac9.jpg Cut and fit both sides and top. Secured with a thin flat screw with washer and then topped those with small pieces of duct tape. Sealed all corners and leading edges with tape and here is what I had. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...61f0d73bcb.jpg DW slid in nicely and the insulation stayed in place instead of rolling up like a sock. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...8a421d39b5.jpg Eazypeazy in like Flinn. Cheers 8/2/16 update: Although not related to home improvement, I did discover that REI has a 12' folding kayak made out of a solid one piece of the same or similar plastic material. It folds down to the size of a large accordion briefcase. Just better bone up one your origami.. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...3c184cae6e.png Sent via Jedi mind trick by the cat |

After 6 years of living with a poorly lit dining room finally put up a chandelier!
The house is a 1918 Colonial Revival. Dining room and living room are joined. My Grandparents lived here for 40 years before I bought the house and had used a different room (more a breakfast nook) to eat. We put the original dining room back into service. Nothing like cutting a hole in a perfectly good ceiling 😃 Crawling in hot attic was worth the result! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1470175681.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1470175747.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1470175804.jpg |

^^^^
Yup, Had an alarm and she was a screamin..... Ended up replacing the float that required me to cut the float power cord that came from the pump itself. Connected, capped, sealed, heat rapped and sealed again. Replaced with an external float that now triggers the pump. Boy, that was a treat!!! Thanks for the gas line paint pointer. Actually been prepping for that. Now I've been checking out cabinets for our room improvement from NewAge. Anyone that has experience with these, feel free to chime in. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...4405cf2e8b.jpg Installing this for my welder or compressor. Sent via Jedi mind trick by the cat |

Full Gut Reno - ca. 1910 Tudor
Don't have the skills nor the time to DIY this one...my contribution is writing checks and making the 10,000+ decisions that are required in a project like this.
Starting point. Lovely Tudor. PO owned since early 70's. Raised 6 kids in the house. Spent nearly $0 on upkeep during 40+ years. https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...DSC_0094-L.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...DSC_0097-L.jpg Demolition derby. Lead paint, asbestos...the whole shebang. https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...ssmsc4fu-M.jpg Demolish masonry wall that borders driveway (and makes it too narrow). Demolish side entry for basement (for access to prior owner's "Silence of the Lambs" doctor's office). https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...o7YQdcR3-M.jpg New open floor plan...structural steel in ceiling due to removal of load bearing wall. https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...Z9R7pvnJ-M.jpg rear porch demolished, proper footing installed. Will be finished space now (Powder room with a view). https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...JpvtncC7-M.jpg More perspective of open floor plan. Rough electrics in. https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...IKgU2vLm-M.jpg Rough mechanicals in. 2 zone Central A/C replaces 9 window units that were tossed in the dumpsters. https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...4CouiZE4-M.jpg New rear entry door, all new windows https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...rzQ2I3dW-M.jpg More new windows https://photos.smugmug.com/10-12-Cli...RuqB9I8w-M.jpg |
Wow, that is quite the undertaking, Jacob!
The house and the neighborhood must be worth the effort. |
Dang,
That place is gonna be gorgeous when it's finished. Sent via Jedi mind trick by the cat |
thanks fellas. We think its worth it.

What Did You Do To Your Home Today?
After the room improvement under the house. I just couldn't bring myself to put the crappy looking state surplus metal lockers back in. I'm usually a day late and a dollar short but I just happened to visit the Costco online web page and caught a cabinet sale literally the last day...
These get delivered this coming Monday, Woot Woot. I know, I can be a dork at times. It's the small victories in life. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...52a43f5ad3.jpg Ok update on the delivery date...8/29/16 http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c3551f4fc6.jpg Both cabinets damaged from ?? One tall locker arrived locked and unable to get to the two additional cabinets inside. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e1f5d40053.jpg No return call or email from company |
Steps were falling apart every five years or so.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476384271.jpg Opened 'er up and found cancer inside. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476384434.jpg Filled core with concrete. Re-mortared bricks with Type S. Packed that baby. Don't be lazy and add too much water. (but I'm a bit ashamed to post final and still not done w/touch up on surface.) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476384606.jpg |
Temporary fix for a cabinet hinge second time around:
Made a template for screw hole locations first. The 110v welder came through again. Freakin' pot metal junk. Tap-tap a ring to hold it all in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476385882.jpg Final. It installed in a hidden location and has held up so far. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1476385896.jpg |
