Cool Porsches (or cars) I once drove....(and loved)
Yes... I know I will be outdone on this one
But here it goes. (inspired by the "what constitutes a 'porsche'" thread) My friend's 1973 911S. It reminded me of my 1966 912- yet- with a lot more power. With the sunroof open, and looking at the stars, I remember flogging in second, and it had a powerband like a friend's early 70's camaro. The car kicked you back in the seat. Bigtime. Years later, I rode in another guy's 930. He was a graduate student from Germany, and adopted America as if it was the autobahn. The guy had no concept of speed limits. He drove around all day long at 130+ mph with impunity. For me- I felt if we got pulled over we'd just say- "It's okay- he's from Germany." I would say- It's okay- you don't understand- It was safe and totally under control....Pay no attention to these droids...He let me drive but I never got past a three digit number of something or other. Later, when I got back in the 73- S, he took it up to 90. It felt strained- like a VW bug! ![]() What's your story (p-car or otherwise)? Last edited by LEAKYSEALS951; 04-28-2016 at 05:26 PM.. |

Now in 993 land ...

Haha - that 930 now would feel like a VW bug compared to modern iron. Sometimes it is like that old GF. Better to keep them in your memories instead of seeing them again ... (I am sure they think the same!).
My first ride was in the back seat of what I think was a mid year S. I recall watching the speedo go from about 45 to 90 mph in what seemed to be a split second. My sister was in the front seat and I was in the rear right. Watching the controls. ![]() My first muscle car ride was pretty cool. BB Nova in San Diego. I could not believe how the thing launched. We were going down some neighborhood street with slight elevations crossing streets, almost catching air. G |

yeah... his was a 3.0. A rocker came loose, so he put on some cams, but then another graduate bought a 3.3 (or something) turbo and then the German guy got jealous. At the time I was driving the 924 so I wasn't even in the game.

Working for my dad during my senior year one fine Saturday afternoon, I was watching his long time client get out of his 928 from our 6th floor window of our shop in Downtown LA's jewelry district. I had just bought my first car, a 1980 Celica GT. So I had to ask and wanted to talk and learn about his 928. I can only think of Risky Business. He promise to give me a ride if I would get out to buy lunch for all of us while my father was setting a big diamond for him. Holy smokes, my skinny ass was thrown around, mostly pinned to the back of the seat. I grabbed a few burgers and walked back to the car. He was outside leaning on his 928. He took the bags out of my hand and handed me the keys. Now my heart skipped a beat and said, " No, I don't want to do anything to harm the car and can't pay for any damages if I got into an accident". He didn't answer me and got into the passenger seat and said," lets go, your father is hungry". What's a boy to do? I don't my father's to go hungry. I drove like a freaking old lady because I was scare sihtless that I would get into an accident. Finally he said, "On the next straight, floor it in second gear. I don't want your dad working on my stuff hungry". I did what I was told and took it up to about 6000rpm. For some reason, when I put the pedal down, it seem so much faster then riding as a passenger. Man, all I can say is "Porsche, there is no substitute!" None of my friends believed me that I drove a 928. Those bastards. Until this day, I am not sure if its an S?

Drove a tesla roadster sport when they were just out. That electric torque is unforgettable.
Remember my first time in a turbo 944. Was at auto rose and I traded cars with one of the guys. Pretty sure my helmet hit the sunroof when the boost hit! First time driving a 911 was Noah930s 930 on mullholland, and yes I drove it like a grandma! |

My best friend in high school had a BMW 2002 tii.
I flogged the hell out of it because he let me get behind the wheel. I don't believe in driving like Grandma. It had a similar amount of power as my 914-6, but not the handling. We smoked the crap out of the tires around corners. It just slid all the way around the freeway onramps. A little later, my uncle, who was working for Toyota in the R&D department, let me drive a prototype 16 valve OHC car. I think it was a Corolla or something - I can't remember. All I recall is that it was very small with a very revvy motor. I flogged the crap out of that thing too. I was gone for maybe 40 minutes. I sort of think that they might have had problems with the engine after that. But hey, what are prototypes for if not to find and fix bugs? |

Taking my old 951 out for a high speed run in the middle of the desert. Cruising at a 150 or so. And My header panel flies off the car! I thought I hit a coyote... Needless to say I couldn't find the panel, and I looked for a while...

I was there when Sid got the Tesla test drive. I did it too. That is one tiny little car but it was like a forever first gear. At an autocross track it was a hoot.
Back in the late 1970s I was driving my stock 914 2.0 and a guy in a 914 with large flares flagged me down. We chatted a while and he was a Air Force pilot and a bachelor. He spent all is money on his car and living at on base at the BOQ. I had never seen large flares on a 914 before then. It was a factory steel GT flare kit. The engine sounded funny or not funny, just way different than mine. His 914 was a factory 914 6 that while he was living in Germany he over reved the engine and bent some valves and he decided to save time and do an engine swap. As I remember he had a 2.8 liter 911 engine in it. It was a very high compression competition engine some German builder stuck in it. It was a monster. A few weeks later I was in Atlanta at a Peachstate region PCA track day at Road Atlanta. A guy was there with his old used 911. It was a real RSR that in that era was just a used car. I got a ride for a few laps around the old Road Atlanta circuit before there was a chicane on the back straight. The guy was an senior airline pilot for Pan Am back in the good ol days of huge salaries for airline pilots. He had a 908 also. No rides for that car. Also at Road Atlanta the local Ferrari club would basically hire the Porsche club to run a track day for them. We would work hard and earn enough to turn around and rent the track the next weekend for us. A good friend of mine owned a Ferrari Daytona. The 6th one ever made. I got a ride around the track in the Daytona. He was driving very carefully and double clutching every shift. Down the back straight we rand through the gears and when he hit 150 he said that was fast enough and let off. The next week in my 914 I slid through the corner and aligned up for the straight. I got up to 115 and got to the bridge and slowed way down for the turn. The Daytona had an extra 8 cylinders on my 914.

996 TT X50 with the traction control turned off. Lots of fun, but boy howdy a reminder of just how much stability control makes life livable in high hp cars.

The one that started it all for me was one of these, which my Dad bought when I was seven, the first of many sports cars to follow:
![]() His was blue. I can still remember heading south on Potrero Road to 23 to Mulholland in the thing. Not fast but noisy.
