Stay away from alcohol while exercising. I know biking and beer are closely connected but alcohol jacks up your metabolism and is best left for weekends you don't exercise, leave alone do a marathon level effort.

Yeah, I just cannot fathom drinking during any serious riding event, let alone a double century. Now, when I get to the finish line, that's another story

You ain't been trained!

Go train for a double century with a Beer team. You arrive after your first 100 and you drink. Get up early the next morning and ride another 100, and then drink!

The two main beer teams for the MS-150 are St. Arnolds and Karbach.

The MS-150 around here will be screwed up this year. It now starts in both Houston and Austin, end of day 1 is in La Grange. THEN day two is La Grange to College Station.

^HA! Okay! ...I don't want to come off sounding too saintly from previous post.

Now that you mention it, there was this one super secret invitational only schlitz crit night mtb race in the woods. I showed up without knowing the rules beforehand. Each lap involved one jagermeister shot. Also, there was a strict "no lights" rule. How do you ride singetrack in the woods at night with no light? Use the force? I dont know. I remember flipping over some rock, sliding down some hill, winning the race, and then being too plastered to remember to take home the prize. I would probably break my back if I tried pulling that stunt again. This- a good 20 years ago.

This fall, I was at some campground in West Virginia, which had a bar attached to the bike shop. It was a well attended weekend, and a nameless (for legal sake) sales guy for a certain ale, with a certain logo, and a certain bike on the logo was there.

Something close to this:

There was some race of sorts, around the campground, where all riders had to use a specific red bike, drinking a specific unnamed red beer beforehand. In the middle of the campground was a big bmx/ pump track, which I considered veering off of the official race track and crushing the pump track on the official bike (similar to above logo)as my race lap, but by the time it was my turn, I was literally in a "hold my beer and watch this" scenario, and cameras were rolling, which is never a good idea. Remembering the Schlitz crit thingee from years ago, and that I was the oldest person there, I stood down!

I'm thinking a big arse pasta plate on night one, perhaps a glass of vino to wash it down. Endless beers after finish. That would be it. This will be a war of attrition! Something (or someone- probably me) will get attritioned. But enough of the drinking stories. I did get in 40 miles on my loaded touring bike today. Legs are toast. Day one of training- done! Bring it on!

I do not advocate riding while intoxicated. But beer as a "recovery" drink, yes!

Beer is the only reason to ride 100 miles...

Just found this pic from my last double century two years ago.

It wasn't easy as you can see from the looks on everyones faces.
Can you tell which one is me?

(Couldn't have done it without the encouragement from the group on this thread.
Time to start training again...)

There's a guy in the back that looks fresh and happy like he's been drafting all day long...

Hey Wayner

I ticked over 10,000km in the last week of Nov, my goal for 2019. Planning was disrupted when the wife announced a 3.5 week absence in Oct/Nov- so Im pleased to have made it. Highlights - a single day 250km event in early Oct, which my old legs handled much better than I expected. Never done more than 120km in a single day before.

Trying to make 11000 before New Year.

So get back on yer bike.

Cheers Stuart

Ok, I’m not riding much right now. The snow is finally gone but I’ve been stuck inside doing kitchen renovations

Before and after pics:

Ah Bianchi my first true racing bike, with down tube shifters. Did many a century on her, a couple of doubles and two 150 milers with 10,000’ of climbing. She is retired and hanging in the garage with the other bikes. Have a hard time letting her go.

I admire your tenacity for doing doubles now since my hay days were back in the 80s. Longest this year was 70 but tend to get in several 30, 40 and 50s every other day, but my prostate doesn’t appreciate saddle time these days.

Looks like you have a great group to ride with which is invaluable for support and motivation. Keep up the good effort and we are pulling for you. I envy your stamina and drive.

Glad you're still around, Wayner! And glad that you're still cycling.

Cool castle!

We're getting into the bad riding season now which means indoors on a roller.

Nice riding and a very nice bike, Wayne. I was hunting for a Bianchi due to a stick up my back side during the lock down. No Bianchi were to be found for sale anywhere. My shop owner who's a long time racing friend laughed at me. I ended up buying a Giant instead. Still, I want a Bianchi as I have never own one. How many time do you ride weekly? 200 is a long day in the saddle. Good luck with the training. let me know how it goes.

Same here.
I always have a hard time the first few rides indoors. The bike sits about 3 inches higher on the rollers and it makes it difficult getting on the saddle without the bike sliding off. (which is not fun)
