Upgrade to El Capitan??

My computer is hounding me to upgrade from Yosemite to El Capitan. I'm skeptical of Apple upgrades these days. It seems they add features that are convenient to Apple, but not of much use to the computer user. Has anyone here upgraded? What's the difference? Any problems?

They dumbed down a few things.

Disk Utility, repair permissions is gone as the system now automagically takes care of it. RAID management is also gone, you'll need to use command line but if not running any RAID who cares.

But it does use memory way more efficiently, like a good 40% better. My MacBook with 16GB of RAM under Yosemite was constantly banging the upper limit. Under El Capitan I've not seen it consume more than 10 GB even under extreme loads.

Been running it on two machines for quite some time now.

I'm over the few cons.

Dumb question. I have a mid year MBP 2010 with 8 GB RAM (max I believe). I would like to upgrade the HD to SSD and do a fresh install of latest OSX. Is there a convenient way to do this without taking it to the Apple store? I don't relish downloading the multi GB update.

The MBP should be fine with 16 GB and El Capitan.

The download is not that bad. I don't even keep the installer around rather grab a fresh copy whenever I need it. If you want to have the drive drop shipped to me I'll do a fresh install and send it back out to you.

The trick with Apple updates - OSX & iOS - is to get them done a few months after they come out. You want to avoid the inevitable weird bugs they missed and let the general population finish the QA job.

That means delaying for a while under constant nagging from the OS "do you want to update now? No? Why not? I can do it overnight, I swear ! Tomorrow? can I remind you tomorrow? please ? " - but by now, you should do it (if not for functionality, for security flaws being patched). It's pretty stable...

I avoided the Yosemite upgrade to due to poor reviews...until frequently used applications stopped supporting Mountain Lion...lol. Two months ago I developed a hard drive issue not worth fixing, so I bought a new iMac with EL Capitan. Didn't miss a beat. Certainly an easy transition.

El Capitan is crap for our office use. We have now 3 Mac Book Pro machines. My main laptop is on Yosemite but we are having problems with applications not yet supporting El Capitan. So our high volume copier for example, wont work yet with El Capitan.

I think I'll wait, but if El Capitan gets rid of the Safari beach ball of death, then I would switch once I see that our El Capitan Macbook works with the copier.

What machine had the hard drive issue?

May take it off your hands for parts.

on my 2009 machines (iMac and PwrBk) Yosemite was a disaster. Constant crash, hang, slow. El Capitan is much better... but I still need new computers...

Too late. Sorry Stomachmonkey. I pulled the hard drive out and destroyed it. The rest went in the trash. It was just a core 2 duo 20" iMac I bought in 2008. It stopped recognizing the mouse...any mouse. Rather than wait a week and spend money on an 8 year-old computer, I just walked out with a new one.

My scanner stopped working after the upgrade.
I have to restart the computer if I want to scan something.
