Better example, broadcast TV. Do we expect the networks to put on (pay for) the show without showing commercials? Of course not, they wouldn't stay in business and we'd soon have no more networks. Television is not a charity, it is a business. PP is not a charity either. The BB is here to promote PP, the business. Wayne doesn't need to apologize for that. Didn't the idea of "everything-on-the-internet-is-free" die with all the dotcoms?

it took you more time and effort to reply to this post than it does to close one simple pop-up window.

Personally, I give Wayne ALOT of respect for not moving this post to an off-topic board...

Why let a perfectly rational solution spoil a good rant?
Chris gave you the source of the problem, and a simple solution: Quote:
Thanx, Wayne!Better still, the solution works under Internet Exploder 6.0.2800

Yeah the popups can be a pain, sometimes when you close one, 3 more showup. So I have found a better way to fight them without having the trouble of aiming your mouse. It is called the (alt)- F-4 keystroke. Here is how it works. When you get a popup, While holding down the alt key, tap the F-4 key and the popup will be deleted. You can fight the popups as soon as they show, and they will disapeer as fast as you can use the keystroke.
Caution: Make sure that you are fighting the popups because you can delete the page that you were looking at if you get carried away. Have Fun

In the time it took you to type and post this, you could have downloaded and installed a popup blocker.
Or you could use a browser that doesn't allow them, or enable the cookie and only get one per day. In other words, this is not Wayne's problem, it is your problem. Moving the mouse pointer a few inches and clicking on an "X" isn't that fricking difficult, and it helps his business. That is a small price to pay for the depth of knowledge on this board. And if you don't want to deal with popups that spawn more popups when you close them, STOP SURFING PORN!!!!! Knock that crap off before you go blind, or give yourself carpal. Tom |

When they first appeared, I was browned off, but it's Wayne's BBS and we are his guests, so I quickly learned to deal with it.
Besides, you're burning extra calories by moving your hand a 1/4 inch and closing the box!! Wayne's giving you guys a free workout! "I clicked Wayne's popup closed for 6 weeks and I lost 44lbs!" - M.S. from Detroit, MI ![]() Besides, if you look at it like me, we all need the Pelican BBS much more than it really needs us. Admit it!

I also run a number of businesses that provide free and paid service over the web.
Nothing is free anymore, the dot gone boom has happened and today its about ROI. Wayne has created a wothwhile knowlege sharing community that is also his potential customers. I am AMAZED that we are not subject to more advertising on this site. The fact that most people get only one pop during a session is a credit to commercial conservatism. Respect commercialism it pays for most things.

I guess I'm just blissfully ignorant. (that's what my wife tells me) I really had no idea that Wayne was using pop-ups, pop-unders, push-ups, and pop-tarts to promote his business. The software I use doesn't even allow the display of banner-ads on web pages. Have I been missing anything good?

Super Popup-blocker 3.0:
http://www.zg2008.com/ Works perfectly... For those who are really paranoid (like me): - Use Zone-alarm Pro (personal firewall) - set Explorer not to accept cookies except those you implicitly specify (a small icon of a eye and a stop sign will appear in lower right window), right click to allow cookies from sites you specify - Use popup-blocker (like one above). - Add good Antivirus protection on the top. That way, you can surf worst possible porn-style-multiple-window-nagware-popup-ad-banners-from-hell and stell be relativly safe. Also, make sure that download of unsigned ActiveX components is disabled in Options, and that signed should promt first. Sounds like too much to care? Well one of my friends clicked "OK" on one of those "press here if you want us to improve safety of your computer" ActiveX-plugins. Couple of weeks later, we somehow found log1.sys file that contained everything he typed in last two weeks, together with every site he visited...timestamped and all.

We can go on and on about how if your computer is properly configured, you will "only" get one popunder a day. That's not the point. Neither is ROI, dot-com boom, Mozilla, or popup blockers.
It's about trust. I am a strong believer in the ideology that Google espouses: don't be evil. Don't break the trust your viewer has in you. And although many people will self-justify having to put up with unwanted advertising for products they're already perfectly aware of, the maximum number of people can be reached when there is an unbroken circle of trust between the user and the site owner. And the people who think Pelican is some benevolent angel for providing this forum? Please. Give me a break. Can you imagine the number of dollars this forum brings in? Why do you think it's maintained? Although Wayne's a great guy, I don't realistically think he pays for the bandwidth and hardware for this site out of the goodness of his heart. (Although I'm sure it has an impact. Love ya, Wayne!) Things are turning around in the Internet. It is no longer cool to put up a bunch of popups, have your page covered in advertising, or to push marketing on people when all they want to do is read the content they came for. Excellence is a great example. There's ads all over the place, right? Well, sure, but there's not an ad on every single page of content. And many times, the ads in there are full-page, and I can simply choose to skip right past it. This forum has two ads, minimum, on every single page of content, and half the time on my obviously improperly configured browser I get a popunder ad for a site I've already spent many, many dollars with. My point? It's no longer okay to simply bombard people with marketing. It turns them off. There comes a point where people will skip right away from this forum, and the Pelican Parts main page, simply because it's a commercial site that uses "too many" popups/popunders. For many, one popup is one too many. /rant off.

(Wayne actually closed me once with one of his pop - up's
)Think it's a modest way to showcase products, esp. new stuff. And despite all the *****ing about pop - up's - well, it is Wayne's sandbox...It's a small price to pay, this BBS wasn't free. rjp

AnalogK Pow, small simple effective.
200 popups in a day, you must be hitting all of the hacker/crack sites and porn sites on the internet. Popups are annoying, but jeez, if it's just one it's not that big a deal. I bet you think there's a problem if you ever have to wait in line too. What color is the sky in your world. Sorry, just kidding, it is useful for blowing off steam during an pita day at work.

While we are on system-related stuff........
Strongly suggest you guys install AdAware This program scans registry and disk for spyware/ad-related processes that have been covertly loaded by advertisers/spammers/web marketers et al. You can run a scan whenever you like. I run a fairly clean system, but was amazed at the amount of covert processes running on some of my machines - especially those used by my teenagers. Nasty stuff. AdAware is a great tool.

Yeah, the ad people are setting up folders with their ad's inside, so the ad brodcasts from your computer - if you try to delete they regenerate (mirror)
So- I found the folders, went in and deleted everything inside, not the folder itself, and changed the properties to read - only and set the admin - level so only admin. can change it. (Win 2k Pro) No more ads. rjp
