Working with gravel

Remember, gravel weighs about 100 lbs per cubic foot. I would get it as close to the site as possible! 7 yds of gravel will weigh almost 19000 lbs! Figuring on 100 lbs per wheelbarrow load, that will be almost 200 loads! Put it close and replant whatever it kills later! Good luck.

Neither. Paver bed should be concrete sand/stone dust, not gravel......

Not going to happen in one day with a shovel and a wheelbarrow. The best solution is to find a way to get a dump truck to get it where you need it.

Second best is to fork it in with a big bag of gravel like the kind at Lowes.

I wouldn't use gravel.

Use cypress mulch instead.

Drop on driveway and use scoop shovel and wheelbarrow.

Most people who use rock could have used cypress mulch instead.

Lower cost of material and less labor required to install.

Win-win.

I believe OP was using stone as a base for pavers.

That's what I read as well.

I'm merely suggesting an alternative to pavers and rock.

Yes, the gravel is for the base for the pavers. Getting a truck to the back yard is not an option.

I've already jackhammered out an old slab that was 6-8" thick and hauled all of the concrete 4 houses down to my neighbor's, who had a hole in the woods in back of his house that needed the fill...that was 50 or so long wheelbarrow trips. . . . so I hear you about the amount of work involved! I don't mind manual labor. . . . saves me from going to the gym

The only 'easy' thing about this project is that the back yard is clay and the digging is easy this time of year.

Thanks for all the inputs.

I really like the dingo but the bucket is pretty small. Still a great machine though.

I had a similar project and the stone yard said they had a yard kid that would do it after work for $100. Yeah, I felt a little lazy for not doing it myself but it was worth $100.

This place is great. I just checked our tool rental place and I can get this for $89 a day. 16 cubic foot capacity, so 1/2 yard per trip.

I never would have thought about it had I not posted here. . . .

i'm a big fan of the tarp.

you dont scrap it down to zero on the tarp..at the end i just pulled up the corners and rebuilt a smaller pile..the last bit you can kinda roll up and go.

i think i just hate sweeping.

Now you need to rent a mini skid steer to load it!

For maybe $40 more, you can rent a bobcat, get it done in 10% of the time and save your back. It's the shoveling that will do you in, more than the driving.

Winner winner chicken dinner!!
One of the best tools I ever bought.
Dig up trees, dig trenches, move rock, gravel, whatever; all with one hand while drinking a beer with the other. And if for some reason I do have to put down the beer, it has a cup holder!!

Exactly! The fact that I'm doing this myself with mostly hand tools tells you that
a) I'm a cheap b, and
b) I don't mind a little hard work

Got the pit almost finished. I rained like a mother Friday so it was too muddy to work this weekend until later on Sunday afternoon.

I appreciate all the inputs!
