Drone Fishing

Look at what these Aussies have been up to!

Not sure what I should think ethically - should we outlaw a new method every time it becomes available? After all, we have motorboats, fish finders, tide tables, artificial scent lures, nylon line etc. etc. After thinking about his for a while, one issue I see is the drone possible coming down hitting someone in the head when fishing from shore. Not every beach is deserted like the one in the video.

Of course, you also need fish present and water clear enough to see them in. I don't think this is going to be possible in a lot of CA pacific waters.

At any rate, I though this was a neat idea, well done video and apparently worked on the first try, so I wanted to share with you guys.

OK but I wouldn't do it... Certainly unethical IMO.

Taking a line out with a drone...bad.
Taking a line out with a fish-finder equipped $50,000 boat and burley....OK?

No comment about the boat... But spying on the fish from above and dropping the bait right in the middle of them is bad form IMO.

I used to fish about the same way 40+ years ago- used a kite. Worked perfectly when there were off shore winds. Only difference I could not see the fish, and had limited control of the kite- really just how far offshore it went. I had three lines to the kite- one on the kite, the fishing line and a line to drop the fishing line when yanked. Worked great.

Seems to be the fishing analog of baiting bear or deer or running/treeing bear with dogs. All pretty lazy, lame and low forms of shopping. "Congratulations!! You've paid enough money to pick a fish on your video game!!" YMMV.

If you search the old fishing books, they used to use kites for fishing.

One technique was to fly a kite over the area where you thought there were fish, then lower a live mouse tied to a hook to the water level so the mouse would thrash around to draw a large Pike or Muskie.

Commercial tuna boats have been using helicopters for decades to spot the tuna schools and report back to the boat as to where to trawl - pulling in tons of tuna, instead of just one fish.

Why is it unethical? Because it's effective?

I do agree that it's not "fishing." It's "catching."

People use planes to spot Swordfish, then they harpoon them.

Just another step on the road to wiping out everything we can eat faster than it can reproduce.

The double standard force is strong here. Ethics are man-made (unless you believe in a higher power). Eat cow, pig, chicken: OK. Eat fido, fluffy, or black beauty: oh the horror.

Fish with $50-100k of equipment: OK. Drone: bad.

I don't have a problem with locating fish with a UAV and dropping a line. It's just a better fish finder. Sure it can cover more area faster and drop a line for you, but that's no big deal. It's a nice novelty, but the flight time of consumer UAVs is pretty limited. You would be spending a lot of time charging batteries.
I liked the comment, "That ain't fishin', it's catchin'"
The best part of fishing for me is sitting on the bank with a cooler full of beer and sandwiches, watching the clouds go by. Once in a while a fish will be rude enough to bite and interrupt, but if you don't use bait you can minimize that annoyance.

So shoreline fishing a pond with halfway clear water - or in one of our local springs - with polarized glasses should be illegal?
