Anyone using a Garmin Dash Cam?
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/567313/pn/010-01750-00# |
I just bought the VIOFO a119 v2 a few weeks ago. The instruction manual sucked, but YouTube had videos on how to set it up. I do need to hardwire it, as it’s just plugged in the power port now. It has a very small screen to look at. I tried to transfer it to my laptop and had to download a program to see it.
Next time I’ll buy something with a bigger screen and easier to operate. But then, maybe it’s just me. I bought a 4 way adapter for my iPhone 8 to plug the SD card, etc. into. It doesn’t see anything. Tried a thumb drive and not enough power to operate it. https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-Included-Optional-included-Certified/dp/B01M28B92C |
My dash cam is still working great!
I never hard wired it into my system...rather have been plugging in the cigarette lighter plug each time I drive and removing it when done driving. The thing is......once in a while I forget to plug it in and I'm thinking - what if something happened and I didn't have my dash cam benefits? All because I was too lazy to hard wire it - even though Craigster has mentoned doing it for his - at least a couple times here. Duh! So, this task finally made it's way up my to-do list and in preparation I was checking out YT and found this video that shows some little fuse taps that make the job a lot easier - and thought I'd share in case it's of interest. All the years of doing car stereos we just found a place to wrap a wire around or attach a spade and we were good to go. Now they have these fancy gizmos......and I like it! Available on Amazon apparently. <iframe width="1237" height="696" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8b9CvUMcNQo" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Going to check my Silverado today and will post as appropriate in case it's of interest.

I have my dash cam running all the time in my Miata NC. It is not a very visible car at all. My suv I feel I don't have the need for it but should.
Cheers, Guy |
Since I got hit last April, I have been running a helmet cam whenever I ride. The ***** I see on a regular basis... Red light runners, inattentive drivers, general stupidity. The crappy thing is, you could have a video running that clearly sees the offending driver AND license plate, notify the PD/CHP and they still will do nothing about it. Ridiculous.
Example: https://imgur.com/a/38pPWBe I do catch neat stuff every now and then: https://imgur.com/a/HQNisCu |
I recently hard wired mine after living with it plugged into the lighter. Unfortunately, the over head light power turns off after I leave the truck.
The camera turns on but I have to press a button every time. Going to find a permanent power source soon.... |
OK, I found a kit on Amazon that is designed for my Spy Tech cam and has exactly what I need:
Spy Tec Dash Cam Hardwire Fuse Kit with Micro USB Direct Hardwire Car Charger Cable Kit for Dash Cameras (Micro USB and Fuse Kit) I love reading product reviews and in this case, there's several that contain actual photos of the install by the purchaser. Shouldn't be a big deal once I receive my kit. As long as I use the right fuse location though (as A930 above found out!)! |
In my DD, I have a dashcam wired into the glovebox cig lighter.
Totally hidden and turns on/off with the ignition. Set it and forget it. My 911 cig lighter probably would not work because of the euro sizing. If someone can post a hard wired solution, both the products and how you routed it, I would install a dashcam into my 911. Can you explain again how the ATO fuse kit would splice into the ancient fuse box of the 911? |
This capture is of road debris - some sort of rubber mat - that I ran "into" and over. It took at the lower spoiler and radiator shield a few weeks ago. Out of pocket right at $100. Didn't bother with even calling insurance. Unfortunately, the debris had apparently been out on the interstate for a while. Just after I hit it - an 18 wheeler was pulled over to the shoulder. He hit the same debris and it took out air lines to his left rear wheels.

I didn’t do anything, but all of a sudden, it turns on and off with the key.
I’m not going to touch it. I do wish I had a bigger screen though. |
Below is what I ordered off Amazon. The aux cable I bought attaches to the OBDII connector - which powers the dashcam 24 hrs/day so it can be used to detect motion while the vehicle is parked. If anything triggers the motion detector the dashcam captures the video. The cable is about 6 or 8 feet (don't recall) so there is plenty of length to route overhead in the headliner trim from the rear view mirror and down the A pillar to the OBDII connector.
