Climbing Highway 74, the curvy "Palms to Pines" highway out of Palm desert was a joy. Bap it down a gear or two, and the little six-cylinder had plenty of get-up-and-go. On the way back down, simply coasting without brakes worked fine if using smooth steering inputs. Though my wife trusts me, I could tell she was not enjoying the higher speeds around corners, so I eventually started either downshifting or using a touch of brakes.

The old 5.0 wouldn't stand for that type of hooliganism without creaking, groaning and plenty of cowl shake.

I never explored the true limits of the car (hey, my wife was with), but from my limited experience, a very impressive car.

Any Mustang from 67 to 72 with a 390 or larger motor is a muscle car.

I'll refrain from bashing them as being plastic.

I make no promises that i'll be able to contain myself completely when it comes to the flavor of the month gimmick styling or the "fine outstanding examples of today's yoots" these cars seem to attract.

I certainly will not refrain from commenting on the POSER EXHAUST NOISES these cars make or the personality disorders they are designed to cater to.
Of course that could also apply to any newer Chrysler car or camaro or Ferrari.

Piped in exhaust noise, bah!

I'm no fan of the piped in exhaust noise that various cars are doing these days (I think the Mustang only does that on the Turbo 4)...I think that's pretty lame; however the V8 'Stang has one of the best sounding exhaust notes out there, in my humble opinion.

Spot on...I like the exhaust tone of my lowly '09 Bullitt. Ford spent a lot of money getting the tone "just right", trying to mimic the movie sound without exceeding the legal db limits of the time. Bullitt models only have a specially tuned H pipe, along with mufflers & tips that give a nice off throttle burble. No sound tube or piped in sound...

Yeah, it's a lowly 4.6 with a mere 315 horsepower...but it drives out okay for me.

Now to plastic and squeaks...see this picture of what Porsche called a "full leather interior" back in '72. Everything black is plastic...and yes, the dash had an annoying squeak where the also plastic defroster vent poked through the dash. After several efforts, I gave up, lived with the squeak.

As far as comfort goes, Cindy always complained the the old 911S sports seat gave her a backache. The Bullitt models got the same seating as the GT 500 of that year. We both find them very comfortable.

Paul, sometimes I think you create new Mustang threads just so you can remind everyone here that you used to own a '72 911S. I might be wrong, though.

No, I'm not. :)

pwd72s 05-23-2016 04:22 PM

Well, if this doesn't convince Sammy that I have experience with both Mustang and Porsche, I don't know what will...

masraum 05-23-2016 04:38 PM

How about this? Is this a muscle car or do we have to call it a shoebox?

<iframe width="853" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Jm6U_Of3QOc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And while I do know and agree that Mustangs and Camaros are technically pony cars, I'll still probably call a mustang a muscle car from time to time. Depends upon the audience, and the car.

pwd72s 05-23-2016 04:46 PM

Uh..I'd guess that '57 had something a bit more powerful than a stock 283 cubes under it's hood. Very definitely some muscle being displayed there.

< Emphasis is mine >

Whoa there, big fella. Step away from the crack pipe. You'll need to take the weight of that Hyundai Genesis Coupe and add a ton to have that statement be accurate.

3500#, not 1500#. If a Genesis coupe really did weigh 1500# or ever 2500#, especially with 350hp, it would be plastered across the front of every car magazine in the world.

Per the Hyundai website
  • 3.8L manual trans - 3515 lbs
  • 3.8L R-spec manual trans - 3523 lbs
  • 3.8L Ultimate manual trans - 3600 lbs
If you want an automatic, the weight goes up quite a bit.

Per Wikipedia
Quote:

The curb weight of the coupe is 3,389 lb (1,537 kg) for the V6 and 3,294 lb (1,494 kg) for the 4-cylinder.
I think you confused the 1500kg for 1500lbs. If you want to get lbs from kilograms, you need to multiply by 2.2.

And, Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8L 0-60 times are between 5.5 and 6secs per wikipedia for >2013.

A 2013 911 will do 0-60 somewhere between 4.0 and 5.0 secs depending upon the version (but not including the GT3 or turbo).

Did the 6 blip the throttle on downshifts to match revs, or was it just the Eco Boost?

manbridge 74 05-23-2016 05:55 PM

Shelby was know to have called it a secretary's car when they asked him to moosle it up. I'd say he did fairly well.

I also wouldn't call any 911 a sports car. More a GT.

John Rogers 05-23-2016 06:08 PM

It is all relative......Phil Bonner's Daddy Warbucks Mustang was probably a "muscle" car and his stretched funny car was for sure!

Sincerely, the former owner of a 2008 GT500, 2010 GT500, 2008 Roush 427R, and 2010-2015 Roush Stage 3, one each. All super fun cars, all muscle cars.

Maybe they don't weigh as much as we think...

rusnak 05-23-2016 07:05 PM

The '57 Chevy in the Youtube is one go-dayum fast *****.

mreid 05-23-2016 07:19 PM

Everyone in the world disagrees with your foolishness. Mustangs are muscle cars.

M.D. Holloway 05-23-2016 08:15 PM

I know no one that has ever referred to these as a muscle car in fact that sorta makes me laugh a little thinking someone would. I mean they are cute and all that and its absolutely darling how the engineers at Ford have made them sound so impressive ... kinda like a little puppy with a deep bark!

rusnak 05-23-2016 08:51 PM

^ That might be the first time that I agree with one of your posts. Are you feeling well buddy?
