i'm awake because my shoulder is sore.

i just sent email to my doctor.

my sore left shoulder wakes me up every night. not screaming pain, but a dull ache..more nagging than "ouchie".

my archery hobby is all but gone..ironically, my right shoulder is pain free now because i am resting my left shoulder from archery. i KNOW what is wrong with my right..arthritis and some minor impingment thing. regular shoulder exercises the PT guy showed me keeps it in check.

the left is a different pain. the same exercises hurt to do..

i just kept the email simple: CAN i get an MRI? haha.

My right shoulder has this same ache that wakes me up at night after about an hour on that side. My life is so active with heavy lifting/repetitive movements, and muscle strain (I work as a prototype tech in a factory, run a farm, work on cars, and cut/split/stack firewood), that I don't know if it is deteriation, arthritis, injury, or other.

One thing that seems to help (at least temporarily) is sitting in my hottub with one of jets aimed at my shoulder/neck. Have you tried a pain relieving cream like Gold Bond, or BenGay, they might do the trick.

^^^^^Fitty indeed, but a bad car accident a few years ago, and several bouts of Cancer haven't helped either.

I had to get mine ripped 2x to get it back to normal. My surgeon works with a lot of pro and college athletes so he sent me to PT where he send his athletes. It wasn't passive therapy like before. All I can say is it was brutal.

Indeed...

A day of blasting around at 120+ on my Hypermotard a couple years ago resulted in torn rotator cuff issues for both of my shoulders. A bunch of nasty snowboard crashes in packed conditions probably didn't help, either.

9 months ago, I could barely lift my arms to shoulder height. Probably at 95% range now. Getting old sucks!

I had my shoulder ripped a month ago. Why'd you have to get it a second time? PT is getting expensive, but I'll keep it up if it will prevent another procedure.

I tried swimming & PT when the pain started & it just seemed to make it worse. The only thing that helped the pain was the cortisone shot. But my shoulder was already frozen at that point. I wish I would have received the shot at the onset of the pain, it may have let the PT work & prevented the frozen shoulder.

Vash, I had the same symptoms and mentioned it to a buddy. He said it sounded like torn rotator or torn labrum. I saw a doc and ended up having both, plus my bicep tendon was damaged and had to be detached and re-attached. Good luck.

been awake for a year with a shoulder problem. mountain bike/skiing accidents.
not allowed an mri in Canuckistan, the land of free substandard medical. (btw-actually it isn't free, we pay 150/month).
i'm not allowed to have a my own gp until the age of 65. walk-in clinics are not allowed to prescribe an mri. the old catch 22.

Had my right shoulder rebuilt last September. Still recovering. Now that the right feels better, i realize how bad my left shoulder is.

i'm an awful family member, i was on vacation when he had the procedure to fix it and never knew. he said he is 95% better. i'd love the 90's%% anywhere.

my mountain bike buddy - Kevin - went in for a shoulder operation. In Squamish B C.
the operating doctor nicked an artery. Kevin bled out and died in the operating room. Kevin left a wife and a small child behind.
how does something like this happen?

DUNHAM, Kevin
December 19, 1966 – September 21, 2014
Heartbroken does not adequately describe the profound sadness that we feel as we announce the sudden passing of Kevin Dunham on Sunday, September 21, 2014. A remarkable man, an adoring father, a loving husband and a selfless friend, Kevin lived his life by sharing his love, kindness and generosity with so many. A well- respected and well-known "bike doctor" at Simon's Bike Shop, Kevin was a magician with his hands. His passing leaves a deep void in the cycling community in his hometown of Squamish, and beyond. In his final moments, Kevin was surrounded with the unconditional love of his family and his closest friends. Kevin is survived by his loving wife, Heather; his cherished daughter, Ava; and his caring mother-in-law, Mary. A Celebration of Kevin's Life will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish. Upload commences at 5 p.m. with the Celebration between 6 and 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, an account has been established at the Squamish Branch of Royal Bank for the family for Ava's future endeavours.

There is risk in any surgery. The surgeon made a small mistake but it was the difference between life and death. Few jobs have deadly consequences if you move your hand a 100th of an inch in the wrong directions.

I'd be patient. Your body usually can heal pretty well on its own. I have not seen good results on shoulder operations on wear / tear situations like yours. I have one buddy who is FUBAR from 3 (!) operations. I have poor shoulders. I just refrain from throwing balls etc. And when they bother me, i.e. after falling off my MTB, I take some vitamin I and it goes away after a couple weeks. Swimming helps too ...

Not an expert, but I am sure you have to be off more than 1/100th of an inch ...

If you don't have an operation, you are guaranteed not to bleed out. Just saying. That is a terrible story creaturecat - sorry to hear about it.

I hear you. But it's been a year or so like this. Maybe two.

I'm KP insured so I'm several steps from any surgery. . Figure two cortisone shots and a year of PT, some seminar, a support group meeting, etc.

I had impingements in both shoulders. At 34 years old I was having trouble driving, couldn't lift anything, and couldn't raise my arms above shoulder level without a cortisone injection every few months. After the 5th or 6th set of cortisone injections my doctor suggested surgery (subacromial decompression). PT did nothing for me--after getting an understanding of the mechanics I don't see how PT could help an impingement. I found an awesome surgeon who did the right shoulder and then the left about two months later.

The relief was nearly immediate. Each shoulder was 90% within a 2 weeks and 100% within a month. I can do "hands up, don't shoot" with the best of 'em now. I may be an outlier but my suggestion is that if you have a shoulder impingement that is causing trouble, get it fixed.

if you have bone spurs, you're gonna wanna get them cleaned out. besides re-attaching my labrum, and doing some other things...removing bone spurs was the biggest relief to pain.
