Need help with engine & trans shipping quote

All:

I've decided to put a GM gen IV 5.3 V8 engine & transmission in this, because 320bhp is better than 180bhp & a 6-speed auto is better than a 4-speed.

Found a good deal on a low-mile engine & transmission, but shipping is a killer. Other than the ususal suspects (FedEx, UPS & Fastenal), is there anyone else I can use? Current quote is over @1k even if it's on a pallet & is shipped to the office.

Thoughts? Maybe just source one closer & go get it?

Cheers,

Paul.

Take a look at Forward Air. I used them to ship a 911 engine and they were the most reasonable; around $180, Vegas to Denver.

Lotsa 5.3s around. You can't find one closer?

I'm thinking of a 5.3 swap into an older Chevy truck. They pop up on craigslist often, or I may do what I did to build the 911 hot rod- Buy an entire vehicle from an insurance auction. That way I know all the components will work together, and parting out the rest will bring in a fair amount of cash.

I used YRC to ship engines twice. First was Seattle to me here, including border crossing, $880. Then I shipped an engine from here to CT, again including border crossing, $500. These were both back in 2011. The engines were winched down to a pallet and box in a plywood/2x4 crate (I reused the pallet and crate to send). How far is it coming? If you're shipping it from the other end of the country, $1000 doesn't seem too out of line.

I had a LS6 long block shipped to me via Estes Trucking from New Jersey to Chicago for $100 a few years back. What will make it easier and cheaper is if you can drop off and or pick up direct from their terminal.

I shipped a 911 engine from WA to NJ about 5 years ago and it was around $1200 through a factors company.
Thankfully the engine was recently rebuilt and bought it for under $5k. Shipping engines is just expensive anyway you cut it.
Try Freightguote.com?

I'll pm you their info and the guy who has helped me out from time to time on some large commercial furniture products moving.

freightquote.com

there is the quote they email you and then a much lower quote over the phone after you get the email and ask why the rates are so high.

Nationwide Engine Freight Service: Home

I used them to ship a 32V 928 engine. 700lbs ish. was under 300$ from Il to PHX. Really good deal.

I have bought eBay 5.3's from back east as well and shipping would be 140ish pick up at local freight terminal.

Call the local fright terminal companies.

what year are you looking at? Junk yards sell them for under $500 local.

Thanks guys. FWIW, it's the LC9 & 6l80e transmission I'm specifically looking for.

I think the smartest way to do this is look in Boise, ID & Portland, OR & just go pick it up.

Cheers,

Paul.
