Question for US Navy guys - submariners...

About 8 years ago I hired a guy who retired from naval service on the Dallas.
He is a very good man.

I wouldn't think twice about hiring another "machinist's mate".

Ancient history (mid-70s) I was in the Navy and never heard of the first name thing you asked about being limited to subs despite having some buddies who were "in the boats". Fyi, subs were (and still are, I believe) called "boats" not ships for historical reasons. Enlisted men called each other by first names or nicknames often in informal situations, as did junior officers to each other. What djmcmath describes above is similar to my experience.

Correct, my father made it a point to ensure that I knew that a submarine was a boat, not a ship. I also heard the one about submarines and targets.

What did the gay whale do when it happened upon a submarine. It bit off the tip and sucked out all of the seamen.
