These cars are collector's items, much more than I thought: only 949 XB GT coupes (that's what mine is) were made. So, because of that, this car cost me $13K AUS, which is roughly $7-8K US. Like my Carrera 2.7, there's a chance -- a good chance -- that this car won't depreciate as long as its present condition is maintained.

A blower? Why not! I had no idea that they used an XB GT coupe as the starting point for Mad Max's ride. The fact that one was only makes this purchase something that may have been, I don't know, fated? You see, when I caught this bug I had visions of a matte black Falcon coupe with a V8.

Yeah, an XB GT was extensively modified (cosmetically) by the filmmakers. Here’s some pics of an Australian-built replica that was purchased by someone in New York.

Another note, Matt, and after seeing the posted photos of the Mad Max car, how could I forget:

Although it could be a replica, I've seen a Mad Max-like car around here in L.A. (in Burbank, actually, which is home to Warner Bros. studios, Disney, Universal, Johnny Carson, etc., etc.)

Genuine "car territory" Burbank is, and in the case of the Mad Max car, it was located outside Priscilla's, a coffee house frequented by a lot of screenwriters and other studio folk. It's quite a machine in person - very daunting with that blower up top on the hood.

If you ever make it to L.A., come out to Burbank on Friday night. There's a Bob's Big Boy (a burger restaurant chain in L.A.) that has Detroit V8 muscle cars (real Shelby Cobras and Mustangs included) and a lot of cool Harleys on display every Friday night.

I don't know if you get Jay Leno's "Tonight Show" down under, but he's a variety show host whose also a big car guy. Sometimes he shows up to Bob's in/on a variety of steeds: i.e. a "road legal" one-seater Formula Ford race car, a 220 hp Yamaha-equipped Ford Festiva, even a jet-powered motorcycle (which he doesn't ride anymore since setting a Corvette's front bumper on fire with the jet's exhaust, or so folklore has it).

Matt, check this out. I found some pictures of a Shelby Cobra Mustang GT 500. This is just like the one the guy had back in school. Only his was orange with white stripes. He had the same wheels with the white letter Good Years. It had a 429 V8 with two holley 4 barrel carbs. Good for around 340HP.

I had a pristine 66' bug with Cragar mags and raised white letters on Goodyears. Completely different thing but I loved that bug like no other car since. It was my ticket to freedom.

I'll never forget the sounds of the big block V8's street racing after dark in the Darwin suburbs when I was in Australia a couple of years ago...... beautiful sounding cars ! In Sydney I remember seeing an Impreza WRX police car chasing a muscle car up the highway towards Newcastle - what a sound !!

So then Matt - you reckon that you could whoop the Carrera's ass with your new piece of Aussie muscle ? How about round the twisties then ?

I've always wanted to spend some quality time in L.A. (well, I am a filmmaker!); "Bob's Big Boy" sounds like the kind of place I'd live at! Burgers, fries, hot babes, and wicked cars! "Priscilla's" sounds like it'd be another haunt, too.

I occasionally watch Leno; I like his style, and I like some of the cars that he has. Does he own a 911? It's cool that he frequents "Bob's Big Boy"; he sounds like he's one of those rare celebrities who isn't agoraphobic.

I have to agree with you about the Mad Max car -- it's brilliantly emblematic of the fictional world George Miller created.

Well, it definitely has that classic V8 rumble! Like a 911, it sounds good across the entire rev range, but unlike a 911, it runs out of breath at the top end.

As much as I like the GT, the Carrera is in another league. No, wait -- make that another universe. My Carrera is a flame-spitting horizontal rocket that spins to 7,600rpm faster than you can say "GT", and devours corners like the Falcon consumes gas! Not that the Carrera doesn't like to drink!

I think $30 to $40k is probably a good guess. However the one in the picture is probably worth more.
I'm not sure but I think in the movie Gone in 60 seconds the car was a GT350 based on the same motor you have. Obviously the GT500 came later. I remember reading that the GT 350 was used for a couple of shots but most of the movie actually was shot using a Mach 1 Mustang disguised as a GT350.

It's funny how I ended up getting back into Porsches. I hadn't owned one in 12 years. I was actually looking for some old Detroit muscle to restore. (T-Birds, Ranchero or a Buick Special). Well on my journey to find a classic car I drove a few and had forgotten how bad they handle. Then I bulb went off in my head. I could have it all. Classic car, performance and handling. It's called an early 911.

I think "The Car" was based on a Lincoln Continental, minus two doors.

The 1967 GT500 Shelby Mustang you pictured was powered by a Ford 427 Side Oiler.......... I also think and have to go back to the books for this......Ford ran short of the 427's in 67 and used 428 Police Interceptors also. Oh yeah wt the dual carb set up try at least 450 hp and being able to sustain 7K rpm all day.......after all thats the motor that was in the GT40's that kicked Ferrari's a$$. Also try the neighborhood of 50K + USA $$$.

The 67 GT350 Shelby Mustang was powered by a 289 High performance.

The 1968 GT500 was powered by a 428 Police interceptor and then a 428 Cobra Jet thus the K designation on the late 68's.

The1968 GT350 was powered by the 302

The 1969 GT 500 and MACH 1....R and Q code cars had 428 CJ's and 428SCJ's

The 1969 GT 350's and Mach 1 M codes had 351 Windsors.

1970 Shelbys were unsold 1969's that had 1970 vin numbers put in.

1970 Mach 1's had the 428's, 351 Windsors and the 351 Clevelands

1971 Mach 1's had 429's and 351 Clevelands

The 1969 and 1970 Boss 302's had 302 V8's

The 1969 and 1970 Boss 429's had a 429 hemi, which was designed for NASCAR and not Drag racing.

The 1971 Boss 351 had a 351 Cleveland


I own a 1969 Mach 1 R Code with a 428 SCJ, I at one time owned a 1970 Shelby GT 350......I also have a 1962 427 Center Oiler low riser wt the 2 Holleys... which would be right for any Cobra or GT 40....

The car is a 69 GTO convertible. factory 4 spd car with 400CID.
It has modified suspension, disc brakes and a few other goodies. it is basically restified. which is a little restored and a little modified. There is actually a shot of the tail end of a blue 69 GTO convertible in the Mad Max movie when they are in the garage.
Kinda cool huh.

No, That one is not the one my pops bought new. The Conv was one I picked up here in LA back in 92 and was a total basket case, If I had known how bad it was, I wouldn't have bought it. I will never do a project like that again. Four years and a lot of work later it was done. everything was replaced and modified and it won a second place in a Western Regional GTO show. It really is a cool car.

My other GTO(The one my dad bought new) is a hardtop and also an original 4 spd car. Though not as modified or perfect as the convertible thats the one that is a keeper.
