An utter waste of time
I don't know why I do this stuff. My DIL was tossing a 2 year old BBQ grill in the dumpster because "It doesn't work." My worst instinct took over and I decided I could salvage it. So 2 hours and $18 worth of parts later it works like knew. I'm going to put it on craig's list for $50. I'll be happy if I get $30.
But you can buy an new one for $139. My bookkeeper bills my time out at $155/hr, so practically I have $328 invested in a $139 dollar grill that I might sell for $30. I don't know why I do this stuff. ![]()

So you must not have had work to do that was billable at 155. Further you must have overhead that sucks up a good portion of that 155. SO your actual working rate is considerably lower. A 100% ROI is nothing to sneeze at. U turned a loss into a profit.
I worked for the Millhouse Brothers you know first cozins to Millhouse Nixon former President of the USA...the Brothers are worth several hundred million apiece...yet when they saw a penny on the ground they stooped over to pick it up. Why because they had a respect for money, and that is what it took to make the money they had.

How can you fault an $18 BBQ had for 2 hrs of work? Next time get your butt in gear and fix it quicker? I see nothing but glorious BBQ goodness here, good job!

Grill up some steaks; you'll feel better about fixing it.

I hate throwing things out that work. My daughter (7) asked me if I was goimg to throw out my wheelborrow... rusty, flat tire, came with the house. This weekend I'm making a project out of that wheelbarrow with my kids... I want them to think twice before they throw things out. We didn't have money when I was a kid, we fixed things as best we could.
My accountant was giving me a hard time about working on old beaters and boats when I have a 140/hr billable rate. Now I wear a headset and make client calls while I work on my projects.

Grill hotdogs and sell them for $1 a piece. Turn your $18 into the next Nathan's .

That used to be me. I recently determined my billable rate and a light switch flipped.
Put a new steering rack, etc. and brakes on the Tundra last weekend. Could not get the intermediate shaft/rack coupler off easily with heat and a pickle fork. Called Toyota dealership, $114 later I had a brand new coupler. Best part was the old rubber was pretty much like overdone pasta. New one was nice and firm. Money extremely well spent. On the flip side, the amount of work I did on the truck on the weekend meant I saved enough to go to Copenhagen this summer. So it's a bit of a yin/yang thing. ![]()

the only abnormal thing i see here is that you failed to modify it..you know hot-rod it.
like add a sear-burner..something that requires a bigger propane tank..and supplied oxygen. ![]()

This grill looks almost identical to the one I just saved from the recycler (mine has a circular outside burner on the right hand table).
My grill still worked, but the propane burner inside had rusted, and gave a non-consistant flame. New inside burner fixed it, and repositioned the old brickettes....good as new for $20. |

We have a hose reel that I keep repairing. It works fine but the center hose holding thingy is plastic and failed several times.
I looked at a new one yesterday which was $25. Had it in my hand and then put it back. The old one still works so why spend the money?

Hard to put a price on the satisfaction of a job well done and keeping more stuff out of a landfill.
