classic car insurance, that much?

$2000 through Hagerty?

I wanted to upped the agree valve to 120k. Are they nuts? What are you guys paying? I need to switch to another company. Its driven less then 500 miles a year, due to lack of time.

That's about on par with what I was quoted ($1k = $60k agreed value). Hagerty seemed more reasonable, from my recollection, last time I used them a few years ago. I'm using Erie collector insurance at the moment. Don't recall what I'm paying but it's less than $400 / year.

One of the few bad things about owning an classic car that's only going one way in value

Do you have a limited registration scheme in the US for classic cars? (over 30 years old)

We do in Aus. If you have an older classic and you're a member of a club you get cheaper registration and insurance. However you must also log kilometers traveled and you can't drive more than 5,000 km a year.
I've thought about it for my SC but I do way more than 5,000 km every year.

I just quoted my SC and RX7 through Leland West, with the PCA discount is was about $650 annually. That's with the SC at $40k and the RX7 at $20k. I like them because unlike Hagerty, you are allowed to drive your car to work if desired. Really the only limitation is mileage, I put 3k on the SC and 6k on the RX7.

Why not partially self insure? If it's a hobby vehicle and spends most of its life in the garage, risk is quite low. My pristine 87 Carrera is insured for about half of its current market value. In 40+ years I've never had to file an insurance claim...including daily driver.

One idea is to insure for your investment amount, not for market value. Insurance companies make lots of money, especially on those not willing to accept any risk what-so-ever for their cars. Seems silly.

I pay about 120 bucks a year for an agreed value policy.....a cheep Miata. Full coverage, No restrictions. A not-so-cheep Mustang was about the same. ALL my insurance is thru American National.

I put a low value of $70,000 on my 1960 190 SL and $40,000 on my 73.5 Targa. I pay $700 a year for both thru:

Drive to work ? all the time ?

Hagerty (in writing) also told me it was OK to drive to work on occasion (to show the car off to friends and coworkers). But regularly, nope.. I'm surprised Leland west does that. Very interesting, I will look them up again, thanks !

Edit: Occasional drive to work max 2 per week. That's not all the time, but that's awesome nevertheless ! Thanks for pointing that out Matt !

Just heard back from Hagerty, again in writing:

"To answer your question, Hagerty is flexible with that sort of usage. We do not like to see the collector vehicles driven to work more than 20 times a year, since we feel anything more than that is becoming more of a regular use or back up vehicle. If the vehicles are being used within those guidelines, there are no concerns nor any premium change."

So Leland is 2x/week max => 100 days - vs 20 days for hagerty... Hagerty is cheaper by $150/year for me, after getting a quote (4 cars)... I won't bother switching because my I don't need 100 days - but that is good info nevertheless, Leland West is now on my radar if my needs change... Good of them, and it probably will push the others to match this !

Good company - I strongly recommend them.

I pay about $270/yr for $40k valuation on my '87 911 coupe, and I am in a high-risk state.

The catch here is State rulings and specified tags. For example, in Illinois you can't have AV plates and use the vehicle as a regular driver. Its only to be used back and forth to a repair facility or special events and or shows. Stupid and nothing gained by the restricted / limited tag and with the insurance carriers.

For some cars in the family, talking really early stuff pre-1910 to 30's, use regular car tags. State a value of the vehicle and orchestrate the premium with the carrier. Take the complications out of it. Tell them approx. what you plan to do and est. annual mileage. Drive the damn thing like it should be.

97 M3 with Hagerty with 17K value at $340 per annum, Nor Cal. Yours sounds inline if you extrapolate based on value.
