Dodge trucks. what do you think of that turn knob shifter?

too newfangled? i dont know what to think. are most lever traditional shifters electronic these days?

kinda makes doing a "rockford" a beaotch..

Wouldn't bother me, but I see incompetent users and a class action suit in their future.

If I was an auto engineer, I'd have it programmed to shift in to park automatically when any door is opened.

I've not used one but did get kicked off the HS lot my senior year for doing a "Rockford".

It seems pretty simple to use, though. There must be some sort of feature to prevent removing the keys unless it's in Park.

It is hard for me to adjust to such an arrangement. I did not like the BMW X1 trans shifter either. What is a Rockford?

It works fine, takes about 30 minutes or a few starts and stops to get used to it. Rental?

You wouldn't understand, it's part of American culture.

Quickest way to do a 180, also called a "Bootleg Turn" from the USA's prohibition days:

Very fast in reverse, turn steering wheel quickly until front end slides, shift into first gear while still sliding, hit the throttle once the nose is pointed the other direction.

Ms. Gogars Jaguar has a similar setup, but it's not bothersome at all because there's paddles on the steering wheel if you want to get weird. Still no Rockfords, though.

I think the BMW thing is far more confusing for people who haven't used it much.

I have a 2015 Ram with the twisty knob shifter. It works flawlessly (so far) and I kind of think it's cool... Also, removed the column shifter from the line of sight to HVAC vents, keyhole/push starter, etc.

Worthy of note, like any other modern automatic, it has an interlock that prevents it from being turned at inopportune times... not that you would since it is out of the way. You'd really have to consciously be trying to mess with it.

True for the example shown, however, in low and mid trim levels, there is still an electronic key.

I have a low trim level Ram 1500 with ecodiesel. It has that shifter and still has a key - albeit with a plastic tip that probably has a chip inside. Same key as the MB etc..

The dial shifter works flawlessly. I was skeptical but read reviews and there appears no reliability issue with it. Everyone driving it got used to it quickly. It is nice to have only one stalk on the column.

Like you guessed, most "shifters" on automatics nowadays are connected to an electronic switch. So, in terms of function, it is the same.

The truck has brains attached to the shifter. If you turn the truck off in drive, it will automatically switch it into park for you (you can chose to turn this option on / off).

I did watch some of the Rockford shows. Now you have filled in some of the Merican culture I did not understand. Thanks Dantilla.

Putting the transmission control on the end of a stick is a nod to tradition, but it's time to get over that and do something sensible like the knob or push buttons. My Tundra has the shifter on the floor - just about the worst possible place. Wastes tons of space.

Like when you want to put it in neutral because your floor mat has become lodged over the accelerated but under the brake pedal?

I was thinking more along the lines of you have to press the brake pedal before you can take it out of park. I'm pretty sure you can shift it to neutral from drive without any other motions. Also, the floor mats have anchors to prevent them from walking to bad places around the pedals... oh, and the accelerator hangs from above, it's not floor mounted like P cars.
