Old SCSI hard drives

Just checking the Pelican resource before I put a help wanted post on CL.

Got two old SCSI INTERNAL hard drives, want whatever data is on them pulled off to a thumbdrive. I don't have the computer these drives used to be in, nor any other computer that has a SCSI card.

Anyone want to tackle this for a fee?

here are several adapter cards that you can plug into a PCI slot if you have one. There are also USB to SCSI adapters for about the same price. You can try this site:

LSI00154 / LSI Logic LSI20320IE PCI-Express Single Channel Ultra320 SCSI Controller Card@ SCSI4ME.COM

I have a SCSI card installed in my media center PC, and a G3 PowerMac that still works.

SCSI is quite a, uh, broad description.

SCSI, SCSI 2, SCSI 3? 8/16 bit? Ultra (40/80/160/320) SCSI? LVD or HVD?

And what connector for the physical - as opposed to electrical/logical - interface? 40/80 pin IDC header (e.g. ribbon cable) or hot-swappable (SCA, 80-pin D-type)? Fibre Channel (multiple possibilities)?

You could just look up the model #'s off the drives; that'll have the exact spec and it's pretty much up/down-spec compatible - except LVD/HVD, they don't mix or play together well.

What's actually on them would be useful info too - probably easiest to read old Mac junk on an junk old Mac.

I've still got an old G4 Mac that has SCSI port. I keep it for one last peripheral that requires it (scanner) Not sure how the cabling would work to adapt to an internal. I used to have a box of various cables and adapters, but I think those all got recycled.

This. Photo of the label on the drives and the connector would be helpful. I have some old servers at the house with scsi interfaces.

They are Seagate Barracuda drives. One of the labels says "narrow SCSI". I've forgotten everything I ever knew about the interface, but I recall there was narrow, wide, and double wide?

If anyone might be able to stick these drives in a dusty old server and try to read them, I would gladly ship them to you with a PayPal following.

What I'm looking for is archives of some webpages I used to have, on my daughter's first year and a year long trip we took around the world with her. Compuserve disappeared and took the website with it, and I scrapped the workstation that might have held the backup, retaining only these drives. I think the machine was running whatever version of Windows was current in 2000, it was a PC (a server I built and used as a home computer).

I'd have to pop the hood on my G4 to see what connectors it uses. Too long ago to remember, but it does have at least a couple of internal HD slots.

You need one of these.

https://www.amazon.com/C2G-Cables-30504-Serial-Adapter/dp/B000UO6C5S/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1467596441&sr=1-3&keywords=cablestogo

I have one, but buying one for yourself would be cheaper than the postage to ship them back/forth.

Use one of those docking things that allows you to plug your SCSI drive into it. They have a USB cord that you can plug into your computer. Turns the SCSI drive into an external hard drive. I think Black Widow or some such makes one.

Isn't that for SATA drives?. I wouldn't think it will work with SCSI drives, will it?

I don't know from personal experience, but reading tech support forums led me to believe that usb-scsi adapters don't work well, plus they are hard to find and slightly spendy given the odds of success. And I'll never use the adapter again. I'd rather pay someone than buy something that I'll then discard or have to deal with reselling. Would especially rather pay a Pelican.

You're correct- sorry about that I miscounted the pins. You can still get the scsi adapter and I'll loan you my setup to dump to ide/sata if you'd like, that way you're still only buying one item.

Let me know if you do.

Here's what the drive in my old mac looks like. The heavier pin plug is separate from the multi pin thing.... I'm such a geek...

You're welcome to try one of yours in it.

I have a card that can read those drives on my XP media center PC. Just need to locate it since it was removed to troubleshoot something else 3 years ago. Everything is a bit of a mess because of the home renovation project and our 2 month old.
