OT: Look what I just bought!

For years I derided V8 muscle cars. Now, in the year 2002, I am the proud owner of a bona fide, Aussie muscle car -- a genuine 1974 Ford GT coupe!





Fellow Australian Pelicanite, Victor Coppa, has always wanted an Aussie muscle car. But, for me, this is a sudden, baffling bug that I have just caught, and I don't think I'm going to sweat it out anytime soon.



For those who care, this car is an Australian-designed and made Ford. It has a 4-barrel, 275bhp 351 V8 under the hood. Mechanically -- and aesthetically -- it's very similar to a Ford Mach 1 Mustang.

This car is not perfect, but it's original, and it's far from being as tatty as a twenty-eight-year-old car should be. One of these days I'll treat it to a re-spray. Heck, I might even drop some JE pistons into it, too. But, at the moment, it's fine; it's perfect; I'm just gonna drive it and enjoy it and tease chicks.

Oh, and in case any of you are wondering, this Ford has not replaced my beloved 1974 911 Carrera 2.7!

I saw the picture and immediately told myself. Hmm, looks like a Mach 1 Mustang.

I remember a guy in high school had a 69' ? Shelby Cobra Mustang in orange. What a cool car. He must have spun those tires in front of the school almost everyday. That car would have to be worth some bucks now.

Do you guys have drive-in burger stands? That was thing in those days. Drive your Mach 1, Roadrunner, or Chevelle etc. to the drive-in so you could sit in your muscle car and eat. Then if some "chicks" showed up you could "peel out" to impress them. Although I'm pretty sure the impression we made probably wasn't the one we thought we were making.

Well, peeling out in a classic car is considered a cool thing to do, and I plan on doing it every time I drive this thing! Not to be cool, of course, but to drive it like it was designed to be driven!

These muscle cars make you feel tough, like the school bully. It's role-playing, and it's a lot fun! Okay. This GT is an auto, and, as far as I know, it does have a 9" diff. It should have one!

A Holley sounds good, along with a kick-ass manifold setup, and a big-ass tacho on the top, right-hand corner of the dash!

I found the following on a Web site devoted to the cars in the original "Mad Max" film.

"As Mad Max was filmed in Australia, all (or most) cars used in the movie were Australian, and most of those have been modified. Max's black Pursuit Special (or Interceptor if you will) was modified the most. It started out life as a 1973 Ford Falcon XB GT, a car that is exclusively Australian. Starting out stock, it came with a 351 Cleveland, a 4-speed manual transmission, and a 9" rear end. The drive train was kept, along with most of the original interior (except for steering wheel, dash light, blower switch, and overhead console), and thus mostly body modifications were made.

The XB Ford Falcon was produced in Australia between the years of 1973 and 1976. It came after the XA Falcon which was made in '72 and '73, and it proceeded the XC Falcon which was made from mid '76 to '79. Only 949 XB GT coupes were built, a very rare car! Let us show you a picture of a stock '73 Ford Falcon XB GT, with no body modifications. Just like how the black car started out."

The Mad Max car has always been one of my favorites in film. It's the one car, to me, that typifies a social statement - i.e. a world gone desperate and very dark. It's much more than a road movie or chase film, in my opinion. It shows where, as a world, we could be headed with roving gangs and an ongoing fight for fuel. This is, of course, not intended to put a damper on your purchase or anyone's day, so please forgive me...

On a lighter note, near my house is Barris's (sp?) car facility. You know, the same guy who built the Munster Mobile. He had it on display for years inside his showroom. Currently, he has the General Lee Dodge Charger on display from "Dukes of Hazard." It's very cool, and a social statement in and of itself as it harkens back to Daisy Duke's short shorts and tied off skimpy tops...
