1960s Suits

From 1983 to 1997 I wore a suit, heavy starch shirt, tie, dress shoes every working day. From 1997 to 2016 I wore a suit maybe 10 times, wore biz casual all the time, and often pushed the limits of that.

Now I have a suit and tie job again. So I pulled the suits out of the closet, had them re-tailored, bought fifteen dress shirts and had them starched, found my old ties and dress shoes . . . And hated life for weeks.

But you get used to anything, and now I'm finding myself sort of liking the wearing of suits and ties again. My old suits and ties were distinctly out of fashion for a decade or so, but now they seem oddly fashionable again. I get compliments on my "cool retro" ties.

So . . . I was in a vintage store and saw racks of suits from the 1960s. Many were godawful, as you'd expect. But some were great - dark, complex, subtle patterns in thick, rich wool, beautifully lined and finished, with grand old brand names that I vaguely remember from my childhood.

What do you think? Has the passing of time, and maybe the influence of "Mad Men", brought the business suit of the 1960s back into style?.

In the past 25 years I've worn dress pants, shirt and tie for weddings, funerals, and one job interview I decided to go on "for the heck of it" about 9 years ago. Oh, and a tux for my wedding. Other wise its been shorts or jeans and t-shirts or the occasional polo style shirt. I'm a very casual guy.

I hate suits and ties, hate them with a passion. I never understood why some people think they are necessary either. I'm not saying everyone should dress like their IT department, but business casual is more than fine. Plus when it comes down to it, I'll take the guy wearing a Metallica shirt and camo shorts who gets the job done right the first time over some BS'er in a suit any day.

When I moved into mgt. I wore a suit and tie daily. My favorite was black suit, white shirt, and a skinny black tie. The best comment I received from a customer: "Did you get that from Rod Serling?"

As we know, everything comes around again.

They are pushing tv shows like "Suits" on the kids to bring back the cool factor of dressing up.

I have one suit now, used to have a dozen, gave them to Goodwill, they didn't fit anymore and didn't see the point of getting them tailored (read gut enlarged). I wear it once every year or two to a wedding or funeral.

If you can manage to dress like Sean Connery as Bond, then you should be fine.

My son wears ties, standard and bow. He used to go to middle school in a three piece suit on his skateboard. In high school now, he was conforming for a while but has started to wear ties and blazers with jeans and Jordans.

A pair of Yoropiko by RMC blue jeans, Japanese selvage denim, 10000 stitch embroidery, made HK. On Amazon just $1000.00.

It is called attention to detail

When I first started out working professionally, I wore a dress shirt and tie everyday. I had sport coat and suits. Over time, I shed the dress shirts and ties and dress codes changed. Today I wear casual work pants and polo shirts. My body has changed and nothing fits. I own a one sport coat but no suits. I always liked Brooks Brothers dress shirts and have several of them. Still have some nice ties too.

However, I really like the suit Joe Maddon and the Chicago Cubs wore on a recent road trip, That is my kind of suit.

Attention to detail is one thing but good taste is another. Nobody needs a large dragon embroidered on their ass. Take the advice of women everywhere, if your ass in not your best feature (in your case, it is not) do not call attention to it.

I like that you value nice clothing but, for god's sake, quit bragging about it. Nobody cares how many things you have, who made them, where you bought them or what you paid for them. Really, it doesn't make you look good.

I do find it sad how few people aspire to own and wear nice clothing these days. We are becoming an uncivilized society.

You guys are heathens- every proper gentleman knows that in a polite society one should always wear the "pants with the dragon who spits fire" to warn others that the gentleman has been suduced by the siren song of the gas station burrito.
