Fun / Affordable Car for Under $5000

Gonna pass on the Audi but it got me thinking to ask the age old question...what would be a fun and affordable car for under $5000?

Any Alfa Romeo... Old or new it doesn't matter but if you can't or don't want to DIY then something made in Japan.
Mazda's Are fun. Except for the Miata they've always got a bad wrap but they're well put together and with some simple mods can go really well.

Unmolested VW golf GTI could be fun.
Unmolested Toyota MR2
Unmolested Nissan 350

With fun cars, unmolested is the key word...

Easy, Miata. There is a reason they've sold millions of them.

Miata if a two-seater is indicated. Any BMW if it needs to be a sedan. You can take virtually any 4-door BMW in the low-priced range, it will need suspension freshening, put in new bushings and Bilsteins and start carving corners.

Nailed it. Lots of European stuff in this price range but it will need some attention, guaranteed. You can easily get a $5k Miata that will serve as a reliable daily driver.

For a two seat car Miata (see if you can get one with the removable hard top).

having said that... saw a Toyota MR2 Spyder on the road the other day... looked VERY interesting... a quick search shows they can be above budget but found one at $5K with 100K miles (which isn't didley for a Toyota).

For a sedan, if you don't mind vintage how about a Datsun 510?

Of course I'm showing my prejudiced of what I would buy in a fun car for $5K

Along those lines... maybe beater corvette

I'm in the Miata crowd. Driving one made me a believer.

I have a supercharged Miata, and I paid 7,000 for it, in great shape. In a slightly different vein, a fox body Mustang can be had in that price range. You could get a decent 5.0 GT. I saw a very nice MR2 recently for 8K.

Alfa? You have a different idea of a fun car than I do. I have nothing but respect for Alfa owners, but, jeez.....

(And why would anyone wrap a Mazda? And if it was bad, wouldn't you take it back and make them do it over?)

Miata of course but forgot all about MR2s. Neat little cars! I should go look at that black one while I do the 928.
