So, I'm in a similar but different situation with my 3.0 motor.

It (very likely) has a bad valve guide on #2 because the exhaust side comp is like 90% leak down, basically running on 5 cyl when I pulled it, but all other leak down numbers are right where they should be.

Am I crazy for planning to yank the left carrier, try to pull only that cylinder and fix just that?

Engine has 167k on it, only 34k on top-end rebuild.

What barrels are you going to get? Same pistons?

Did you have alusil or nikasil?

Not crazy, that's what I would do.

I was literally planning to pull the one head off, have it fixed, and put it all back together. If I'm not going to pull the Ps/Cs why would that matter?

I'm not asking to be a wise arse, I'm being serious. Why not just fix what's broken instead of the toss cash at it just because approach...

Sorry-

Question was for original poster.

Your plan sounds good to to me :)

Nikasil. I will be putting the factory Mahle units on. I believe the new ones will also be Nikasil.

We my engine was apart I was real happy I went "all the way" because the intermediate shaft bearings had some significant wear. How was the shaft bearing on this engine?

Cool project to document. No doubt many of us would love to be there to get in your way and ask stupid questions and slow thing down. ;)

The intermediate shaft and bearings looked fabulous. I have not removed the rods from the crank yet. I am waiting for my crankshaft holder that I ordered from Stomski Racing. I should be getting back on it Friday. (my day off) I am going to take the case home and on Friday have it steam cleaned. That should save me a few hours of scrub time in the solvent tank. :)
The guys at the shop seem to think having this motor here is a "borrow parts" paradise. Fine by me since they replace what they took with new.

Mike, I think Glyco has gotten a bad name for other reasons. We have used Glyco bearings in all of the engines we have built with the exception of customers supplying their own bearings. IE. Clevite, Jerry Woods. We have never once had an issue with them. (25+ years) I had a long conversation with Wrightwood Racing on this very issue. For you, and for my own curiosity I will use Plastigauge on the bearings and check. I usually verify part numbers and stampings, assemble, and see how the "feel" is. I'll go a step further for you. :)

Building these engines is not an easy task as you know. The sheer parts count is astounding!

I received my STOMSKI crankshaft holder today. What a piece of craftsmanship! Can't wait to use it Friday. BTW, Great customer service too. Steven Stomski, if You are following this thread, Thank you!
Pics to follow.

I am not getting too much done today. I took the rods off of the crank. One set of the bearings on #3 cylinder had some significant scratches on them. The rest of the bearings looked pretty good. The crank is being shipped off today to CCR to have it mag checked, cleaned out, and polished up.

I also dropped the engine case off at the local steam cleaners to have all the cracks and crevices cleaned. I need to go pick that up before they close.

The rods are going to German Precision to be done. I have two sets of 3.2/3.3 rods already done that I picked up today. Both have ARP rod bolts. One set is for this motor and the other set is for sale if anyone is interested in them.

Today is head stud removal day. I am replacing the original studs with all steel "Raceware" studs. The last stud (upper #3 nearest the flywheel end) is the worst one to remove.

You are a true professional Dan and a credit to Porsche Independents!

I'd wager few are dedicated to that kind of attention to detail, time and care.
