3.2 Carrera engine project (to be sold)

I just received my core engine today that I purchased here on Pelican.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/921343-1986-3-2-74-backdate-exhaust.html
I purchased it less exhaust system.

I am going to do a full rebuild on this motor and thought it would be kind of fun to document and share the process from start to finish.

When I am finished with the motor, it will be up for sale.
I am expecting about a two month time period.

Hop on and enjoy the ride. :)

There will be two ways to view the pictures. I will post a link to a database and post pictures here.

Cool Dan, looking forward to your progress!

Engine forum maybe? Not that anyone will be disinterested.

herr_oberst 07-29-2016 04:46 PM

Sub'n. Keep it here in OT!

I thought about that but it would be nothing new to see there. The OT area made more sense to me. Most of the people in the engine forum do their own work. I figured the OT would attract a wider audience. People are going to see how much work actually goes into a full rebuild. I promise! It won't be boring. :)

wdfifteen 07-29-2016 05:26 PM

I'm intrigued. I'm working on a 3.2 myself. Keep it here. Keep PPOT relevant.

Ray 911s 07-29-2016 05:29 PM

I'm about am week ahead of you, but working at a glacial pace! Subscribed.

Cooper911SC 07-30-2016 06:46 AM

I'm interested too.
Need to decide on rebuilding a 3.0 SC engine or swapping in a 3.6 I have on hand...

masraum 07-30-2016 07:37 AM

Very cool. I think it would be fun to do the same, but don't have the time, money or space.

Are you going to go stock or just address any weaknesses or add any performance upgrades?

It doesn't really seem like that tough a question to me. ;) :D

I sent out a set of cams yesterday to have reground to 964 specs. I will also send the ones out from this motor. I could go either way. It depends on who wants the motor when I get to that point. I plan on putting new barrels and pistons in it too.

A friend had a 3.6 in an SC. I had to rebuild the 915...

onewhippedpuppy 07-30-2016 11:45 AM

Keep it here, I like a good rebuild thread! What's the going rate for a 3.2 now, $15k?

Bump the compression a bit Dan. It makes a 3.2 come alive; especially with 964 cams. Have one in my 73.5.

Joe Bob 07-31-2016 08:31 AM

Price?

I was thinking the same thing. I remember when I had my '88 reading about the upgrade from a Barn-Door MAF to a hotwire, with bigger injectors, slightly bumped compression and a free flowing exhaust. Sounded like a real hoot.

Kind of a tough question at this point since I have no idea how much it is going to need. A lot of the hardware is corroded and will need to be plated or replaced.
Made a little more progress today.

I'm sure you will make change. GLWS and the rebuild.

syncroid 08-11-2016 05:53 PM

I am going to tear the rest of the motor down tomorrow. Pictures to follow.
There has been no update because I was on vacation last week. :D
The sheet metal has been sent out to be powder coated and the tin behind bank 1 (cylinders 1-3) has been ordered. That will go out to the powder coater when it arrives. It's coming out of Germany. The tin that came with the motor was modified for SSI heat exchangers. That piece is being powder coated as well.
I will be sending the cooling fan, fan housing, strap, pulley, and shims out for refinishing tomorrow as well.
I received a brand new air filter assembly today from the dealer. The old one was broken.
Engine gasket set, main bearings, rod bearings, countershaft bearings, and timing chains have been ordered from Wrightwood Racing and should arrive possibly tomorrow.
Hopefully, time permitting, I will get the heads, cam towers, and barrels/pistons shipped off to the machine shop tomorrow as well. Also will be sending the cams off to be redone if necessary. Still going to wait to decide if I am going to put the stock 3.2 cams in or the 3.2 cams ground to 964 specs. I have both. :)

911boost 08-11-2016 08:18 PM

This motor would be perfect for my '78 Westy.......

daepp 08-11-2016 09:17 PM

I'm gonna enjoy this! Thanks

porsche4life 08-11-2016 09:27 PM

I was pleasantly surprised at the condition of the cams and valve train assembly. No pitting whatsoever! Also, the main bearings show virtually non-existent wear. I have not pulled the crank out of the block yet. I was kind of burned out today and wanted to call it a day. I did not get started on it until almost 1:00pm today. My morning was wasted running around doing other things.
I did not have time to get the machine work stuff sent out today but that is okay. It is all boxed up and ready to go out on Monday. The Wrightwood order showed up today. I'll photograph all of that when it starts to go back together.

911boost 08-12-2016 09:42 PM

I was serious Dan, shoot me a message on the $

stevesc_us 08-13-2016 03:02 AM

Any chance you will be converting to EFI with ITB's for this build like Al K does?

Now that would be one very cool motor if you did!

stevesc_us 08-13-2016 03:05 AM

Typo...meant to say like Al Ikosmal.

White911SC 08-13-2016 05:13 AM

The PO posted Compression/Leakdown numbers in the original for sale post as follows:

cylinder 1- compression 170, leak down 26%
cylinder 6- compression 177, leak down 66%
cylinder 2- compression 179, leak down 13%
cylinder 4- compression 180, leak down 3%
cylinder 3- compression 180, leak down 12%
cylinder 5- compression 182, leak down 9%

Wondered if you made any conclusions during teardown as to the cause for the poor leakdown numbers on 1 & 6?

Nalspeed 08-13-2016 05:17 AM

Internals look really nice for the mileage, told you Dan I loved on that motor really HARD (lots of RPM's) but always kept up with oil changes and bought stock in Rotella (Shell) lubricants.

Yes. The valve guides were absolutely wasted! Not abnormal for 3.2 engines. The barrels and pistons looked really good too. I'm going to send them out to the machinist and have them checked, cleaned and measured. I will probably put those up for sale when I know their condition. I want to put new Ps & Cs in.

I'll most likely keep it stock except for possibly putting the 964 spec cams in it. We will see how the funds are looking. ;)

Mark, The internals look really nice. It was obvious that you did frequent oil changes on the motor. Good job!

Thanks for posting this info and taking a bit of the mystery out of purchasing a used engine and rebuilding it!

What can be done to mitigate the valve guide wear during the life of the engine?

If regular and proper maintained doesn't prevent the problem, how are you rebuilding it differently to avoid the same problem in the future on this motor?

The valve guide material is going to be different then what came in the motor originally. The new valve guide material is manganese/bronze.

I got the first round of sheet metal back from the powder coaters today. I'm still waiting for the piece coming from Germany, also going to have the cylinder air deflector tin coated.
