Tailgating gone wrong

Great driver's ed video to show your kids...

That exact scenario happened to an ex-girlfriend of mine: she was following too closely and hit a mattress. In her case, she didn't swerve and roll, but destroyed the front of her car (Miata) hitting the mattress.

Guy in front should have done a BRAKE CHECK long B4 this happened.........

Here's the long version. This was a case where there is a long increase in grade. As the 18 wheelers reach the crest and start downhill, they pick up speed. Woman in the car needs a trip to Bondurant... once she's out of the hospital.

Young driver... Dumb move. I hope she at least learns from this.

Beautiful how the car in front just moves a LITTLE bit to avoid the mattress, knowing the car behind would see it to late. Well played, sir!

I hope that none was seriously injured in this accident.
For sure, with such a lesson this lady will be a better driver.
I do not know how driving schools are today, but I believe that students should watch a large collection of these movies to get some experience out of them.

I'd love to know the distance between the striped line to figure out how fast they were going. Also, video was edited (around 0:26 the scenery changes) so this was going on much longer.

She should lose her license for a while.

Typically the white dashed lines are 10' with 30' spacing

Should the truck have moved out of the left hand lane? If it had been going on for some time it looks like the pickup was pacing the semi.

Seahawk 08-08-2016 09:16 AM

I hope the mattress is ok.

The whole thing is over in less than a minute.

I see that now, thanks.

They should have put some orange mesh around that mattress. That would have kept her safe.

968rz 08-08-2016 09:32 AM

it goes from 44.37 to 44.59 when it changes

T77911S 08-08-2016 09:39 AM

the truck driver was kind of an a$$.
you see him catching the semi then "hovering" next to. cant tell how long but the scenery changes enough that it looks like he was there a while.

then in the vid YOU can the mattress up the road so you know he saw it, then he only moves just enough for him to get around.
not saying she was not to blame too.

Ha...that's what I was thinking....:D

The part that amazes me is that the camera car just held his speed and watched the show!

I'd have been on the brakes and had my car stopped before the accident.

Seems to me that the 'camera car' is likely a Semi Truck, considering the height of the video. i bet he stopped as fast as he could!

Pickup driver bears some responsibility for this, but it's mostly down to the idiot in the car. I'm sure the pickup dropped the hammer when he saw all the action behind him!

That was a mega yard sale she spewed. How do people let their cars get so full of crap?

Otter74 08-08-2016 02:59 PM

The pickup driver may (or may not - I don't think the video gives enough information to tell) have been driving like a jerk, but he is not responsible for the Saturn driver's crash. She was not allowing enough room between herself and the truck to safely react to surprises, and doesn't appear to have had the skill to do so under the circumstances either. Whether or not the pickup driver was blocking her, if she had been following at a safe distance she would have had the time and space to avoid the mattress.
