What is LexisNexis??

I keep wanting to ask my insurance guy but I keep forgetting when I see him. He's out on vacation now and I just go another one of these notifications, so I'm turning to the brain trust. It's a form from Lexis/Nexis stating that my car insurance has just been renewed. It also says Lexis/Nexis is not the insurance company. There is no solicitation for anything. I appears to be just a notice.

So what is this about? I know the policy was renewed - I wrote the check.
What interest does this third party have in my insurance situation?

Lexis is an information warehouse and database that is the rough equivalent to and competitor of Thompson Reuters, which combines Westlaw and the Reuters information databases. Insurance companies or others who need to verify information that is publicly available but had to track down subscribe to Lexis or Thomlson Reuters and run your information through the database to confirm whatever it is they're looking for - addresses, claims history, credit rating, property ownership, whatever. Your company must contract with Lexis to manage their policies and pay Lexis to send you the confirmation form. That way the company doesn't have to incur the expense of doing it separately since they already had Lexis do all the work.

Huh... The insurance company sends me the policy and the proof of insurance forms. One would think that would be sufficient.

Lexis must handle their back office work. They save a step by having Lexis send you the renewal notice on behalf of the company.

You mean it's not a gathering of luxury Japanese car owners?

No... that's why they're spelled differently.

I was just having a laugh. We used L/N as well as Westlaw and Martindale Hubbel way back in the 1980s when I was working for an attorney.

A Lexis/Nexis company was started here locally back in the 80s (maybe 70s) by the Mead Corp. as a legal and news database. That is why I was so confused about why I would be getting notices from them about my insurance policy. It still seems weird to me.
